The thing I don't get is why people think that privatization would be bad for social security. America was built on the principles of privatization and individual financial freedom... and that's exactly what makes America work. So tell me again why privatization would fail? Because honestly, I don't get it.

Privatization is out to make a profit out of everything, in some cases this doesn't work.

If you cannot understand why some government services should NOT be privatized then you really need to do your homework.

Sit down and think about the level of quality from any privitized utility/government service when their main goal now is profit....instead of making sure the service is provided.

a defining attribute of a government is that it has a monopoly on the legitimate exercise of violence...

And think of how the Enron executives intentionally caused power blackouts in California, just so it would raise the price of electricity and they would make bigger profits. Too bad for them that they were caught on tape while they were doing it and talking about it.

This is exactly the kind of exploitation you're asking for if you put your retirement money in the hands of private stockbrokers.

Another thing that I find funny is that out of all the Americans that I know here in Europe and Canada, every single one of them laments the "privatized" medical system in the US.

Social security is a sham. It is unsustainable under any of these models.

If I were an American I would operate on the assumption that I won't get a dime from S.S. when the time comes to cash in.

i think most people do.
the only people that don't are the poorest of the poor, who can't save any money.
and thats really who its for anyway... most republicans would rather let them all die in the street though.

It would have worked fine with the huge surplus Clinton had dedicated to it. Unfortunately, that's all been replaced with a massive deficit from shitty policies. I guess it was bound to happen though -- that some politician, at some point, would come along and spend it.
