Well, let's look at the Internet in general. People can be anonymous in so many ways. Some of us are like we are anyway. Some of us are utterly different than what you would see on a BB like this one.
I believe you are right---on a place like q3w most people are looking for group social interaction. Most probably pursue anything personal in private.
No doubt there are some sociopaths on this forum and have been. Maybe there is a bit of the sociopath in a lot of us. But probably a lot of people are just here to kill time, seek information, share a common interest, amuse themselves, etc.
To be honest, I don't see this place as about "attractive" or "unattractive". Any photograph can be thought provoking, or engender a reaction of some sort. That doesn't mean it has to be about whether someone will compliment it or insult it on an intimate level.
Tbh, sometimes it is funny as it can be just watching people fall over each other, lie, compliment, get into flame wars over opinions or comments they have posted, etc., all over a few cruddy pictures. It has nothing to do with anything my ego needs. I couldn't satisfy those needs here or at a place like this.
