Well I have not yet driven a manual, but I do agree that newer autos are faster at shifting and can be downshifted down to first if need be for engine braking, at least in all new Mercedes it can be. Now I never truly got the whole overdrive on and overdrive off switch in the Jeep, especially since it was out of view while driving, but using the gear shifter to tap left to shift down in the ML500 is easy and gives a nice speed boost if you need it when passing.

I can say with reasonable accuracy most of you have NO idea what you're talking about. Stick does not increase your peepee size, and unless you're racing and you're adjusting gear ratios for track conditions, or need it for other performance reasons, auto is as good as stick.

I think some of you might work at Pep Boys with all this car knowledge.

1(L) = Drive using only first gear
2 = Drive using first and second only
D(D3) = Drive using first second and Third

-Overdirve is BASICLY D4, drive using first second, third, and fourth.

Sometimes it's a button, sometimes it's [D4] or [OD] on the gear shift...

well manuals may no longer provide better performance or gas milage for any normal driving condition, they are still a sportier and can be more fun especially in the mountain roads where I live, but they can also be a huge pain in heavy traffic. After I get my licence, that was supposed to be this Friday but the DMV was overcrowded, I plan on finding a friend or someone who will lend me their manual.

Yeah ofc...what I do know is that ALL automatics
are slower then the manual version and that is a FACT.

for example:

BMW 320CI manual: 0 - 100 km/h : 8.2s
BMW 320Ci auto : 9.3s

And that goes for every constructor unless you have some advanced SMG tranmission or whatever wich you can only find on the more expensive sport version like M3 or RS4 or whatever.

Some models have semi-automic tranmission to give you a feeling ur driving stick, so you can manual swith gears by pushing the stick up or down. Those systems are worthless because the reaction time before it swith gears is very slow unless again, you got some advanced SMG system.

yeah, and i know for a fact that with my focus on a dynojet ATX has on average 5-10hp less at the wheels than the MTX.
MTX also gets ~5mpg more.
the ONLY time an AT is as good as an MT is when its one of those crazy expensive SMG2 BMW ones, or the Ferrari Sequential shifting on a 360 Modena.
for any car that normal people can afford, an MT will always outperform an AT in both speed and gas mileage.
hell, just look around on carpoint at the EPA expected gas mileages... the MT 99% of the time has better mileage.

Yah I know, thanks Carroll Shelby. That's true for any stick vs. auto model of the same car. 1. A car with stick is a few pounds lighter. 2. The gear ratio can be made more aggressive with a stick. 3. Less of the powerplant is wasted.

Point is, unless you're racing...and my guess is, nobody in this thread races on an amature or professional level, that one or two seconds doesn't mean dick. You won't notice it on the highway. You won't notice it going to McDonalds and you won't notice it humping your girlfriend in the back seat. :icon26:

your foot will notice the difference in heavy traffic though.

Now as for the manu-matics they are actually quite nice, not as responsive as an SMG, but still good trannies

ever think that maybe BMW does not make the best automatics. Infact I do believe that Mercedes is hailed for the best automatics

I never said it was. I'm saying the average person won't notice the miniscule difference in performance, unless they're in racing conditions.

Are you trying to tell me you're some ace road racer there moto-boy? Walking your motorcycle for a few laps around your garage doesn't count, sorry to say.

That's true. Especially if you run a heavier springed clutch, so there's that too.

if you think the average person wont notice the difference that just proves how little you know about cars sorry mate  theres a massive difference between auto and manual and you dont need to be anywhere near race conditions to experience it  walking my awesome motorbike doesnt count but the huge fast paced ride days i frequently go on does

Sticks are only faster if you (really) know how to drive.

Maybe those seconds doens't mean dick, but dropping your gear means allot.

I'm not a racer at all, but I have a sportive (sp?) way of driving. Dropping a gear to pass someone instead of flooring the pedal to kick-down is way more fun.
