Does anybody have any tactics or tips for Quake III?

Post by Wutai »

I've had the game for about a day, and I really suck. I have the Dreamcast version, because my pc can't handle it, but I do have the DC mouse and keyboard.
By saying that I suck, I don't mean that I'm slightly bad; I mean that I am extremely terrible. I could hardly even beat the bots on the second to lowest difficulty setting.
I guess I've been playing slow-paced games like Halo for too long.
I got pretty good at Halo, but I guess my 1337ness didn't transfer all that well.

Any tips or tactics for getting better would be appreciated.
I suck.

That is possibly the most pointless advice I've ever been given, but thanks nonetheless.
I suck.

get a new pc anything will run it these days and a good connection

Application of timing, trapping, rhythm, prediction, unpredictability, charging, distance control, and the element of surprise

keep practicing

play 1v1s

It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.

I am now sick.

I can't get a new computer, because my parents aren't willing to give me the money, and I don't have a job yet.
I suck.

Much different from Halo...Most important: you to have always be moving/dodging...you can't stand there and take your time to aim, you gotta be quick, have reflexes, and have different strategies depending on gametype...1v1 involves many tactics, whether it's timing items, memorising spawnpoints, openings, ect.

It's gonna take a while to not be sucky, especially on a DreamCast. Just start out with the basics, like surviving. Then work on aim, and movement...circle jumping and strafe jumping are also very important when it comes to 1v1...there are quite a few websites out there to teach you...but don't look into that just yet...master the basics first.

This website will be absolutley perfect for you...

get on line and spectate some players, see which weapons they use on each map, note how they keep moving all the time, learn to travel the map for health and armour, prediction aiming is important esp if your ping is high, dont undervalue the machine gun, and read guides like the upset chaps quake guide to see how you can tweak your config to improve visability, fps etc
and above all, dont listen to toxic :P

Problem is, he's got the dreamcast version, and I think they took down the servers for it (last time i was lookin' there was no response from master server on dreamcast). But even still, you could throw in 3 bots on nightmare and spectate one (Bones is particularly good on dreamcast on nightmare). Also, like someone said before, keep moving at all times, and use dc_map19 or "The Longest Yard" to get better at your movement. It's jumppads and endless voids will teach you how to better manuever around without dying so much.
And the last tip I can give for now is, until you master the Railgun... the Rocket Launcher, and Shotgun will probably be your best friends, and when using the Rocket Launcher, be sure to aim at the enemies feet, to ensure damage from the splash as it is harder to hit someone head on with a rocket than to miss them by a little and still get'im with splash damage.

Also, it's easier to aim with hitscan (instant hit) weapons when somebody is in the air, hope that helps

DC people can play on 1.16n servers and last time I checked, there were still a few of those around. The server needs to have the DC map pack installed, though.

my best advice.

-listen to what's going on around you.
-play bots at a higher skill level ... you won't learn a thing playing bots less worthy then you.
-pointless jumping will get you killed.
-master the art of straffle "strafe".
-watch demo's of good players.
-know when to use what weapon
-try not to be a noisy bitch unless it has a purpose "jumping for nothing, shooting, picking up useless items.
-be an armour hog that means master timing when items respawn
-

True enemy lies in you.
Such as adrenaline.
I think this tip might be too difficult for you to understand ATM. :icon26:

Basically just practice practice practice. But try to look for patterns in skilled players' behaviour. The way to use much strafe to aim with hitscan weapons (LG and RG mainly) for example, and good weapon combo's. How to lead projectiles like rockets and streams of plasma into the path of your opponents. Try to anticipate their movements as good as possible. Also make sure you take the time to aim (especially with the railgun) whenever it's possible. It's often more important to be sure you hit than to miss and be exposed while reloading. So keep your eyes on the crosshair.

Two important things to remember:

1. always try to stay ALIVE
2. so make sure you always have armor and sufficient health and of course the most powerful weapons (RL, RG, LG)

Q3 has a huge learning curve, which is why i love this game so much. :lub: I found it challenging from the start, which is why i finished the Q3 demo at nightmare; a crappy full version with bad sound at hardcore, and finally after some months of online play i finished all 26 maps of the full version at nightmare with the perfect award (got killed 0 times). :p That was very challenging actually, to stay alive till i reached the fraglimit (before the other bots) through all maps. Some demo's of me here: click.
