Internet Connection Sharing across different OS.
Is it possible for me to share a Cable Internet connection across Windows XP Home Edition and Windows 98 SE? My PC with XP Media Center Edition is kinda screwed at the moment and I need to get the one with 98 online to continue working on a project I started for Quake3. I can't take over this one too much so if this is possible using Ethernet cables, please someone let me know just what I gotta do. (I have a hub incase this is required) I have tried hooking the modem to this pc via USB, then using a crossover cable from this to the pc running win98 s.e. and set up shit on both pcs to no avail. Also tried connecting modem to hub and connecting hub to both pcs, set every thing up for that and still nothing on the win98 pc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

umm, no i've got 1 ip address (i had a network running between 2 XP pc's before mine decided to just kinda die...) and as far as two NIC's in the XP one... it's got a LAN card and a Wireless NIC card, but i doubt the wireless will be of any assistance. I've looked up things online that say this is possible and explain in somewhat detail, however there are things i need to install on the win98 machine to make it work, that i have no way of accessing/transferring. I will keep searching myself, but until I can install IPX/SPX and Netbios on my win98 machine I'm screwed... And I can't create a Network Setup Disk because I have no floppy drive in the XP machine, and the damned thing won't write to cd.

i've had it set up with the hub since last night when i gave up and the first pc has connection whilst the second does not no matter what. However the first never loses it by having the first one turned on. And the second one (win98) doesn't recognize the first one or the internet connection. And the first one doesn't recognize the second one in general.
ever think of getting a router?
anyway... if you must be silly about it, unless windows is more retarded than i think, you should still be able to use ICS.
hook your cable modem to the xp machine via USB so you can get on the net.
hook both pcs to the hub using the nics
turn off the XP firewall
in the tcp/ip properties for the nic on the xp machine, give it a local gateway ip: 192.168.1.1 will work fine, subnet mask 255.255.255.0
in the tcp/ip properties on the 98 machine give it a local ip on the same subnet, like: 192.168.1.2, subnet mask 255.255.255.0
reboot both, and they should be able to see eachother and transfer files between network shares.
once you have the pc's talking to eachother, see if you can turn on ICS on the xp machine.

wish it were that simple, but I've got absolutely no money whatsoever, otherwise I'd just send in my pc with XP Media Center Edition and get it fixed. But I have no job or car, the car is coming soon so I'll be getting a job, but no router... I never had a need for one, I shared the connection between the two XP pc's via ICS and a crossover cable, but anyway, thanks a lot Watson, I will try this later on today after I check on a few more things online.

You realize routers come as cheap as $20 right? Its hardly worth putting up with the crappy performance of ICS just to save such a ridiculously small amount of money.Kammesennin wrote:Dr_Watson wrote:ever think of getting a router?

why is it nobody can understand the fact that I have absolutely no money no matter how many times I say it... I have $0.00 to my name people, how the fuck am I supposed to buy a router with that ammount of money??? I have no job or car, can't get a job without a car, I'll be having a car in the next few weeks finally, but the thing is, once I get a paycheck, I'll have the cash to send in my pc to get fixed so the router won't even be of any importance anymore.
