Noob question Please help me

I got some noob questions
First what is ping? some one told me it was my connection rate or something and the higher it is the worse.

second I cant play any multiplayer games when ever i join it kicks me out within 5 or 6 seconds the error it comes up with is pb unit faliure or somthing like that what does it mean?

Third how do i color my name?

First what is ping?

It's the round-trip time to the server. Say you have the rocket launcher and press fire: before the gun actually fires, your client first sends the command for it to the server (another computer on the internet), the server processes said command and then sends a reply back, for instance 'Yes, you can fire' or 'No, you can't, you don't have enough ammo'. This sending back and fro takes time unfortunately, and the more time it takes, the more out-of-sync the situation on your screen will be with the *real* situation on the server. The time in milliseconds is called 'ping'. Lower is better.

You get kicked by pb. Without the exact error it's hard to say.
Try downloading pbweb.exe from here http://www.punkbuster.com/index.php?page=updatepb.php
Put it in quake3arena/pb and run it at least 2 times. Will take a while.

First what is ping?

Players of multiplayer online video games often use the term "ping" to refer to the network latency seen between their computer and the game server (or another player). This could be reported as an averaged time in milliseconds, or more generally as "low ping" or "high ping". This usage is common with players of a variety of FPS and RTS games. In most cases, being a so-called "low ping bastard" is desirable because lower latency provides smoother gameplay by allowing more frequent updates of game data.

In this sense, ping is conflated with lag – one may "lag out" due to high ping.

Usually, this message means your PB is not working properly. First, make sure have the 1.32 Point Release which includes PunkBuster, anti-cheat software. You should run the PBWEB program to make sure your PunkBuster client is up to date.

Third how do i color my name?

When typing your name into the console, enter a caret: ^ (by holding down the SHIFT key, and pressing number 6 on the top row) and then a number between 1 and 7. The caret will disappear, and now all the text you type will be in a different colour. You can switch colors as often as you like. When you press return, the name is saved into your Quake 3 config so u only have to type it once.

The color codes are as follows
^1 = Red
^2 = Green
^3 = Yellow
^4 = Blue
^5 = Light Blue
^6 = Magenta
^7 = White
^^0 = Black
The same color codes can also be used to color chat text

its pb failed to initialise, which means u dont have punkbuster installed and/or actively runing. Go to evenbalance.com and download pbweb and read the instructions. Then u can play on any pb enabled website. If u read up on evenbalance.com it will tell you what pb does, and how it works etc. :\
