I have a 6.5 megabit per second connection, meaning I get what, about ~800kb/s download on a good day. Why is it that when I download stuff in Firefox, my downloads start downloading at a HUUUGE speed. For example, when I was downloading the 5.7 Cat drivers (33mb), the download started with 12mb right away, and the download speed went down from 9000kb/s to 1100kb/s and going down steadily, but it was done before it could reach a stable speed. Why does this happen?

It dependent on the upstream bandwidth of their servers.

It’s not an actual reading of speed you’re seeing but an average speed over an estimated time.

This same thing happens to me on Firefox, I'll click a download link, and as soon as the downloads window pops up, theres already a meg or two downloaded.

Well if you click a download link in your browser it started downloading to a temporary location right away before you browse to where you want to save it.

FF prefetches links from the page. My copy does, anyway.
