iD has been down for years, I think Epic is supperior to iD in any way. Unreal 2004 owns D3s MP, HL2 owns D3s SP (HL2s SP in the end sucks though).

The engine is not a the best one in every area, I think just the shadowing (ofc, soon Quake Wars is to be out, so I might change that statement). And also, maybe Doom 3 is no good game to show the engine strenght after all...

The game Doom 3 itself, is in NO WAY scary, I can't see why people say that, its just plain stupid and to much bad oldschool over it. The backspawning from enemies (for you who noticed) sucks, you also don't get affraid when running in 1mp/h and a zombie in the same speed jumps in front of you glowing yello... but hey, thats just me.

I might be pro-John R, but Daikatana was so much better in almost all aspects, but not the graphics.

The problem is there isn't a proper gravity/weights system yet.

Also, it would be nice to have scripted animations as before, but many different ones for each action, but also include the physics. What I'm getting at is, if you blast someone with the shotgun point blank, they should fly back 20 feet like stuntmen in movies, and perhaps animate grabbing the wound as they fall.

How many years have they been "down", exactly? Their last game before Doom3 was Quake III, which is still pretty damn popular for a 5 year relic. And the Q3-engine was pushing the graphic envelope pretty well until very recently with so many big name games using their engine.

If Id had any pitfalls, it's just with the Doom3 game - and in their history of massive hits, just one shortcoming is still a pretty impressive track record. It's just that with their legendary status, a single 'flop' (it still did OK in sales, just not as huge as it was expected to be) seems like a huge setback relative to their super high standards.

The Doom3 engine is a different story though, it's quite amazing what this engine is capable of. As you know, the Q3 engine was way ahead of it's time and as the technology progressed, new features were added to keep it up to date. The D3 engine is even more easily adaptable since it give much more control to the developers than Q3 could even dream of. We'll probably see some really amazing games coming out on the D3 engine in the next few years to come.

As for Unreal Tournament 2004 compared to D3 MP, that's a little unfair of a comparison... UT2004 was a strictly MP game, designed for just that purpose. D3 was largely a SP game with some basic MP elements tossed in just to keep some people happy. In terms of gameplay, I still think Q3 owns out of any of the UT's. I only really enjoyed playing the original Unreal Tournament. The others were really disappointing. That's my opinion anyway.

I just mean, that one would expect a iD game to own as much as thier previous games, Q3 was very good, Doom 3 sucks. A engine storry, to be honest, Unreal 2x has always been better than the Quake 3 engine, any version. Unreal 1x was way better in making large outside areas than Q3E was, until it got patched with Q3A:TA (patch 1.30(?)). And there are like, twice as many games using any Unreal engine than all Quake and Doom engines put together. I sure think there will come some really nice games using the D3 engine, like Quake Wars and maybe Quake 4 (don't belive in a game that is supposed to be as Quake 2 or something), I hope a new Jedi Knight and Soldier of Fortune, but hey, Unreal 3x is comming, and that has impressed alot more than what Doom 3 did, and there are soon to be comming games with that, first out seems to be Epics Gears of War for XB360, a new Americas Army and also Unreal 2007. I just don't think that iD has the lead anymore, everyone else is catching on and goes beyond, like upcomming X-Ray-, FEAR-, Serious2- engine (and I'm sure CryTek working on a new CryE also), these all look great, feature the latest shader techs, almost every aspect of a advanced engine there is to get, the only reason why these engines and games probably never will hit any larger licence market, is probably because they are less modable and userfriendly. There is a also a new player on the licence market now, Valve, which I think tries really hard to get the engine noticed and get some nice deals for it, recently SiN2 (looks as pre-gen game though).

No, Splash Damage is, but iD sure is helping out with the engine.

Yes they are, and from the screens I've seen it looks pretty damn good.
