Motherboard question

Post by Don Carlos »

Basically, im lookin for a motherboard, AMD 939, with both AGP & PCI E
Is there such a thing? I have recently bought a AGP 6600 GT and
dont really wanna splash out on a new graphics card after having
this for a few weeks, but i do want a new Processor and Motherboard.

So whats the deal? I want to have PCI-E support for my future
upgrades but wanna keep my current GFX card...any one have
an answer at all?

Cheers guys :D

I cannot find one on newegg. I feel your pain, I am in the same boat as you. If you haven't had the card for more then 30 days maybe you could return/RMA it.

Maybe you could buy a AGP socket-939 board, ABit has AV8 for $105, MSI has a cheaper one, but the reviews seemed quite uninspiring. I would do that till I saved up some money for a new, nForce 4, board with PCI-E and a new graphics card. That might work, but does require quite a bit of extra spending.

I recall some boards, socket 754, having both I believe, but they no longer appear on newegg.

You could try and sell your 6600GT to a friend, or on here, or somewhere and use that money for a PCI-E version.

My plight is an unstable Athlon XP, due to overclocking and lack of performance running stock, and a 6800GT AGP.

Now if you are a patient person, like I am trying to be, and lack of money forces patience for me, then you can wait till AMD comes out with their M2s. Not much said about the M2s except for DDR2 memory, I believe a new socket also. So you could use your current rig until those come out then upgrade.

ok thank you sir, might just get a 3700 clawhammer for the 754
and just clock it up to around 4000, that should be quick enough
to run everything i need to run atm. And run my games in ++ detail :D

Got the gfx card running @ silly speeds so thats another bonus

900mhz mem running @ 1060mhz
450mhz core running @ 560mhz

So its none too bad, but i only have a 3000 runnin @ 3200 speeds
because i have an old chip. So if i get a clawhammer then i should
see some very good gains...i hope :paranoid:

Anandtech just did a very interesting review on an upcoming ULi chipset with support for 8x AGP, 16x PCI-E on the same board (even at the same time, but I can't think of a possible use for that).

http://anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2471

It's not out yet, but maybe in a month or two. It's AGP performance is the best out there. The PCI-E performance is average, but not bad by any means.

i have a 3200 claw donny. oc's almost 25% to 2.45ghz(it's over a year old) i may pop of the ihs in a few months just to see how high it'll go. i'm using a coolermaster hyper6 heatpipe dealy with 1 fan on low.(it'll take 2 fans)

you will need a new cooler to oc anything worthwhile so maybe go that route first.

I sir, am running a 3000 Newcastle therefore the overclocking is
not quite as good as with hte clawhammers. So if i pop a
clawhammer in to my machine im confident i could get some serious
increases in perforamce after fiddleing. Tho i would be interested
in finindg out how i can change the multiplier as that would make
things 100x easier. I have found a 3700 for £150 and i can sell my chip for £50, which means quite a bang for buch upgrade for me.
But then as i am running the 754 chipset, this one to be exact
MSI K8N Neo Platinum nForce3 250 (Socket 754) Motherboard (MB-022-MS)
MSI K8N Neo Platinum is the top end solution for socket 754 platform. The new Nforce3 250Gb chipset boasts many powerful and superb features including an 800MHz HyperTransport Bus Link which helps reduce I/O bottlenecks and increase system memory access . K8N Neo Platinum is truly an attractive motherboard for Athlon 64 enthusiasts.

- nVidia nForce3 250 Chipset
- 800MHz Hypertransport Interface
- Serial ATA RAID
- Onboard 7.1 Channel Audio
- Gigabit LAN
- IEEE1394 Ports
- 8 x USB2.0 Ports
So am unsure if it will be worth going up to the 939 or not. If i was
going to do that then i would wait for the range of motherboards
that Psyche911 kindly posted. I am at a bit of a loss as to know
what to do. I think this is possibly the worse time you could
actually upgrade at the moment, because to get a serious increase
in performance i think your going to have to go for those new X2
b4bit chips that AMD have brought out, and they are VERY expsensive.
I dont have nearly £500 to fling at a processor. But there we go.

The 3700 would last me at least a year so i think this would be
my best option as i dont need anything else, just that.
