State of quake 3 arena
Hello everyone im a very long time gamer going on 20 years now played console games mostly switched over to pc when i finally was able to build a great gaming one. Well im a huge fps fanatic been playing them since golden eye. since i moved over to pc i been doing cs, unreal, dod and battlefield. I'm looking to get competitive so im decided to go back to the roots and to what most people declare the definitive deathmatch game ever. I played it on dreamcast but never pc. Downloaded the demo yesterday and must say everyone was right no game ive played thus far captures the fluid gameplay and brilliant simplcity yet depth this game offers. So i decided to stop taking on every new game that comes out and stick to this game to improve my aim and reaction time till the new cpl 1v1 game is announced. Simply put no game ive played and i've played everything runs this damn smooth and fluently. Now heres my question to you guys hows this game doing... still active? What are the essential downloads i need like map packs, fixes etc....Well thank you all in advance for your help. I'll be online soon, just put a bid on a new unopened quake 3 gold edition on ebay.
Hello XEVERED, welcome to the forums!
Let's hope Q4 lives up to it's predecessors.
In order to join PunkBuster enabled servers you must type "/pb_cl_enable" in the console (press the tilde key: ~ on your keyboard to open the console while in-game). In addition, you should enter "/pb_sleep 500" and "/pb_system 1" in the console in order to reduce any slowdown or stuttering due to PunkBuster's scanning.
Afterwords, you should download PBWEB.exe, which will allow you to manually update PunkBuster. Place the file in your "Quake III Arena\pb" directory and launch the executable. It will take a few minutes for it to update, be patient.
Next, Download and install All-Seeing Eye to browse for game servers. While not necessary, ASE is far superior to the in-game browser, therefore I suggest you use it. Open the All-Seeing Eye program. In ASE, under the Game column, you'll find what mod the server is running. Baseq3 refers to a server running w/o any modifications. If you don't have the mod that the server is running you'll have to download it (use google to locate mod developers website and the corresponding mod files). Rocket Arena 3, Threewave, OSP, DeFraG, CPMA and Urban Terror are some of the more popular mods, just to name a few.
In addition, you may find servers running maps you do not have (indicated by their red color in ASE). You can either turn automatic downloading of missing files on by typing "/cl_allowDownload 1" in the console or finding the map via Google. Some of the more popular maps are ztn3tourney1, hub3aeroq3, cos1_beta7b, along with the Threewave CTF and CPMA map packs. You can find even more custom-made maps at LvLworld.
Also, be sure to check out the FAQ, it contains a wealth of information and may contain answers to any additional questions you may have.

Quake 3 isn't dead yet, but interest has been waning. IMO it's the best multiplayer game out there for competition. Problem is the players that started with Q1/QW, Q2, Q3 are getting older now and out of the game. Newer players are looking for better graphics and WW2 style games remain popular. Despite this, there are still a fair number of people who still play. The game is only as dead as people want it to be. Although personally I would love to keep playing Q3, I wouldnt mind a new game either. Quake 3 has been many a hardcore game player's bread and butter for a long time now, but I think we all look forward to a new era of those days with a much larger community, with that new feel and excitement associated with a new game.XEVERED wrote: Now heres my question to you guys hows this game doing... still active?

In order to start playing, first you must update the game with the latest patch, Point Release 1.32. This update includes up-to-date game fixes as well as PunkBuster, Anti-Cheat software used to prevent online cheating.XEVERED wrote:What are the essential downloads i need like map packs, fixes etc....

excuse me...but nobody was bieng a smart ass i was simply stating that i never used the term"dead" in my questioning. My post was sincere and the first guy who posted was verry helpfull so please refrain from telling me what to do. Especially when your completely wrong. This game is great and will never die i just wanted to know how active it was . Server ,comuunity and competition wise. If i offended any of you it was a misunderstanding i dont want this to become a flame post as it started out well.

When I read that I had to give this thread a more q3w feel, sorry for the troubles.
Ain't that the truth. Got my ass kicked proper recently by some Q1 hardcores after being out of if for several years. Was holding my own a little with LosChunk, Memph and a couple others till the old schoolers showed up and gave me a lesson I'll not soon forget. I remember Doomer saying something about being a good q3 player and going up against guys in Q1 that had 6 or so years going in and getting the floor mopped with his ass. I got mine handed to me on a silver platter and asked for more and was obliged.axbaby wrote:man .. you should have been around for quake1 .. it was fun as hell
Q1 isn't even dead yet. Q3 has a good bit of time left in it. But I'll be happy to give you some good Q2 or some so/so Q3. All in good fun of course.

well as of now im on the demo and i must say i am having a freaking blast. I havent felt this way since my days of golden eye with my buddys and now it feels good to just now find out for myself why q3 id THE deathmatch game....cant wait for my copy to arive it'll be a pleasure competing against you guys.
