Good Idea!.. I think I'll steal it. :icon14:

you can tune them to whatever frequency you want. you can spec out the exact driver you would like to use (increased power handling, longer excursion, higher spl's), and design a cabinet (not necessarily a box as demonstrated in the original post), that is more aesthetically pleasing than a black box, that you can make more structurally sound than any commercially available box, and last but not least a response that YOU can tune yourself with very little in room frequency jumps at a given hz by using free software for room measurements.Chupacabra wrote:hmm...whys that?+JuggerNaut+ wrote: home made subs done right, blow the crap out of commercially bought subs with ease.

ah, if you have a clue what you're doing with woodworking, you don't need a "pro". and what you're doing yourself IS custom.Chupacabra wrote:oh i see
you could of course get a professional to do all that right? i guess that would count as custom though. . .
btw do you know anything about having fish tanks in a "theatre room" of sorts? would any vibrations and shit hurt or bother the fish?
i'm not too sure about the fish question, though. it really depends on how much power and air you plan on pushing.
for the two subs i made, i have measured results of 116 dB @ 30 Hz and 106 dB @16 Hz each, which is very good for any sub, much less a commercial one. i'm pushing mine with older Parasound monoblocks of 400 watts a piece.

people that "know" me here know that i don't care about loudness. sound quality comes first.SoM wrote:it depends..Chupacabra wrote:how much you reckon that would cost if you bought something of similar quality (if its possible) from a professional?
all he said was that they're LOUD
and it would prolly be 2 times as much..
but, to answer Chucabra's question, per sub, roughly around $4k. i spent just under $1k. this does not include amplification though, as they're passive. no built in power, which has the benefits of you being able to choose what brand/wattage fits your needs and your room the best.

wow thats pretty good. alas, i have no woodworking skills.
might be worth it to learn how to handle wood and all really well but to make something that requires precision such as that thing would take me years

if the bass is going to tingle your ass, it will bother your fish. if you have to have them in the same room keep them as far away from the sub as possible.Chupacabra wrote: btw do you know anything about having fish tanks in a "theatre room" of sorts? would any vibrations and shit hurt or bother the fish?

most of my questioning is from just plain curiousity (and hopefully something in this whole audio/video thing will manifest from it). i hope you havent felt like you wasted your time typing up the above responses. its been helpful and interesting. im not out to do any of the big AV stuff yet, just getting a feel for the whole thing and learning a few tips here and there if you know what i mean.

i'm a big fan of fish tanks (though I know nothing about them) and thought they would look good in a potential entertainment room.

thanks Maiden, that's kinda what i figured. i'm not going to bother remarking how much these things rattle the foundations, but even half of that is too much for pets imo. yet another reason i do not have one of any sort.Maiden wrote:if the bass is going to tingle your ass, it will bother your fish. if you have to have them in the same room keep them as far away from the sub as possible.Chupacabra wrote: btw do you know anything about having fish tanks in a "theatre room" of sorts? would any vibrations and shit hurt or bother the fish?

tho my home set up is lacking quite a bit right now, I've got the system in my car set up well. can you hear me from 4 blocks away? nope. Can I turn it all the way up without a hint of distortion, yep.

nah, not a waste of time. i enjoy sharing any experience and information i've gathered throughout the years when it comes to A/V stuff. if you got a little something out of it, that's good enough for me.Chupacabra wrote:well, maybe in a year or two you can teach me, if this place is still around then+JuggerNaut+ wrote:i'll PM some info to you if you don't have much woodworking skills. won't be till later on though.Chupacabra wrote:
