Err, yeah. I'm all for liberty and stuff, but i just can't really see the problem with surveillance cameras - will someone explain to me exactly how cameras are taking away our rights? Because i can't help thinking of them as a very useful tool against crime on the streets.

For the same reason people don't feel good about the government looking into their bank accounts. It's really just none of their business.Ryoki wrote:Err, yeah. But i rather think it is the goverments business to keep the streets safe.
I can also think of scenarios where looking into people's bank accounts may be a clever thing to do (hello there sir, how did you buy a new Porsche whilst you are unemployed?)

it depends on who's watching them, and what the cameras are capable of (facial recognition etc).Ryoki wrote:Err, yeah. cctv's been pretty good in the uk/europe so far - for preventing crimes from occurring, and for providing evidence when a crime has been committed.
if americans have the same sort of confidence in their law enforcement agencies that we do, then it shouldn't be a problem - but the leftist conspiracy part of me thinks that maybe some of those agenices (fbi/cia not regular cops) won't handle the power as well as the uk/europe have done. i know that's being a bit bigoted, but america's current public image of being run by paranoid incompetents doesn't inspire much confidence.
that aside, there's also a lot more potential for things to get all letigious in the states than there is here.
 I love the part where he thinks the private sector uses cheap ass b/w cameras. No doubt the employees would have fun using the cameras but PTZ cameras are not a new thing.
I don't really have a big problem with public cameras. I can't think of a single thing I would be doing in public that I wouldn't mind being seen doing (Thats why I'm doing it in public!!).

its most certainly someones business to see who committed a crime, so they can be prevent from committing another.
when people are 100% honest, you might have a valid arguement, until that day, its the (much) lesser of 2 evils.
you might as well say, why the fuck should someone search my bag before i get on a plane, i dont have a bomb, what i have in my bag is private.
you want privacy, stay at home.

i used to live close to the beach in uk, i would sit their with my gf kissing her and shit, and cameras would follow us around loads. they were operated by someone and he was more interested in seeing if i got her tits out, than if someone was doing something illegal.

well, i think many people are missing the problem that some people have with it.Ryoki wrote:But i rather think it is the goverments business to keep the streets safe.

the problem arises when the system goes bad or is handled improperly. it gets even worse when combined with other systems like the patriot act and shit. if you want to know more about it, im sure you can go out there and find some anti-big brother literature and whatnot.
besides, if you were talking or even meeting with some friends about some anti-government stuff (how youre unhappy about the current system or something), think of how badly you could be potentially cracked down--maybe be thrown into Gitmo or something. people feel that they cant really be "free" even though theyre not doing anything overtly harmful or illegal.
also, instead of always finding whatever the government wants to find, it somehow, potentially makes everyone a suspect. or atleast this is how many people feel. how would you feel if all your phone conversations were monitered? sure youre not talking about some anti-government stuff (and even if you were, that should be ok), but wouldnt that make you feel odd? a lot of people feel pyschologically restricted and believe that they arent free in mind or spirit or whatever. even though you can say that they shouldnt feel that way, i think you have to acknowledge that it happens to people and you have to address that.
anyway, im not totally arguing about all this stuff. just trying to point out why some people have a problem with cameras all about and shit (which is important to understand IMO).

I can attest to that since I've observed and done so myself with a bank of controllable, zoomable set of security cameras when nice looking gals have come within range.horton wrote:having said that.......

So basically all terrorists have to do is distract security camera operators with a few paid makeout performers, it seems.
