Try to think tactically. Attempt to build a deeper appreciation for the tactical nuances of Quake, or any FPS for that matter. Here are a few tips:
- - Keep your cool
- Watch and learn from your opponent
- Avoid predictability
- Learn when to run away
- Maintain situational awareness
- Anticipate your opponent's moves
- Know when take/give up items
- Take a smart approach to doors and natural choke points
- Don't silhouette yourself in doors and windows
- Camp tactically
- Listen to the audio cues
- Use prep/prediction fire when available
- Strafe around corners
- Backtrack occasionally
- Avoid natural kill zones
- Don't hug the walls
Good Luck and Happy Fragging!

-Strafe jump by jumping and strafing and the same time.
-Collect everything you see to build up health\ammo\armor up and so your enemy\enemies can't.
-Learn to lead your enemies with non hit-scan(instant hit weapons). Ex. Predict where your rockets are going to it when you launch them at an enemy in mid air.
-Run away lots.
-Aim rockets at the feet to deal splash damage.
-Use hitscan weapons to aim at slow moving targets and frag them quickly.
-Don't camp in 1 v 1, 2 v 2, etcetera, you're giving up parts of the map which you need to control.
-Time items.

But be careful: item pickups can give away your position (sound cue). There will be times when you want to refrain from picking up that armor shard so you can sneak up silently behind your enemy.Quebeth wrote:-Collect everything you see to build up health\ammo\armor up and so your enemy\enemies can't.
Well... a little tactical camping can get you a long way. Let us assume you know the RA (Red Armor) will respawn in roughly 10 seconds. Now, you can make another round and hope it's there when you get back. But you don't want your opponent to get it, of course, so you camp for a bit. As with most tactics, it has its pros and its contras. You'll have to learn from experience when it works and when it doesn't.Quebeth wrote:-Don't camp in 1 v 1, 2 v 2, etcetera, you're giving up parts of the map which you need to control.
Don't make a habit of picking everything up. It gives away where you are and where you've been.Quebeth wrote:-Collect everything you see to build up health\ammo\armor up and so your enemy\enemies can't.
Just as audio cues can give you away, you can use audio cues to deceive your opponent:
- - Open doors but don't enter.
- Launch a rocket down a corridor you have no intention of entering.
- If there are 4 armor shards, pick up 2 of them (if there is another place with 2-3 shards).
- Hop into the water then quickly get back out.
- In a few maps, you can step onto then off of an elevator to activate it.
Every now and then, it makes good tactical sense to stop, take a break, and assess your current situation. Find a place that offers a good field of fire and protects at least your back and one side. Stop and listen. When you're running around and shooting up the world, it's hard to hear what else is going on around you. Listen and take note of what sounds everyone is making, what audio cues the map is giving you, etc. Just as my comrade ^misantropia^ has eloquently stated, in certain situations it may be more advantageous to strategically camp in order to maintain a favorable position.Quebeth wrote:-Don't camp in 1 v 1, 2 v 2, etcetera, you're giving up parts of the map which you need to control.
Damnit, everybody likes to take apart my posts 1 comment by another and nobody elses...

Huh? That's not camping, that's just stopping for a few seconds to listen for your opponent or waiting for something to spawn.
Camping=when you stay in one particular area that you think is a clever hiding spot and stay there for a good duration of the match.
"But be careful: item pickups can give away your position (sound cue). There will be times when you want to refrain from picking up that armor shard so you can sneak up silently behind your enemy."
But you still have the advantage, you have the red armor and megahealth while they don't, so even if they do find you, you'd still have the better chance at getting the frag.

It's nothing personal, Quebeth. We love you and want to kiss you always.Quebeth wrote:Damnit, everybody likes to take apart my posts 1 comment by another and nobody elses...![]()
But it is. You're thinking of lame arch campers.Huh? That's not camping, that's just stopping for a few seconds to listen for your opponent or waiting for something to spawn.
Of course. It's the ammo boxes/ammo shards/5 HP health I'm talking about. The benefit of grabbing those may not always outweigh the costs."But be careful: item pickups can give away your position (sound cue).
