well i could be biased by the fact i've only used it for patches of ground. a few maps down the line and i'll be using it create those huge cliffscapes in highway 17 etc.

and btw, you think displacements suck you should have tried terrain editing in Call of Duty. there was no 'brush' with a variable radius to 'paint' the geometry - it was all individual vertex manipulation (and the map i did was all outdoors)

tbh my biggest beef with hammer (which overall i think is more powerful editor than radiant) is the lack of 2D wireframe for props and displacements. oh, that and the way the valve modellers stuck the model origins in stupid places :dork:

Thanks for feedback, I've been playin with the lower exterior parts, I just added some rock in the editor rather than model it all out, it doesnt look as bad as I'd thought done this way, added a lil fog as well for some height feeling. Also started on some interior stuff, its going to be real hard to get away from D3 look with no Q4 textures for this part.

If you want varity and you're only going to be able to see that stuff 'vaugely', i.e. the player ain't gonna see it unless he's on the long drop, then model some more sections and just place um together...

Simple tutorial, but you get the idea?

That looks stunning scrotch, about the best Doom 3 map I.ve ever seen, including the id ones. Simply stunning. You have a certified downloader waiting here for you.

Its a shame Doom 3 never had bots, or good MP code. ROE fixed a lot of it, but nobody bothered with it after Doom 3.

Yes looks awfully nice. Makes me wish that i go out and buy doom 3 just to play that map. But one map isn't enough.

Nah, but ROE fixed a LOT of issues D3 had online.

Improved netcode, 8 player max limit, CTF game type, 4 extra skins, did i mention improved netcode?

id need to just do a DreamCatcher on us. Fuck the SP game, its better than Doom 3 but still sell that. JUST release the damn ROE MP parts as a free download for DOOM 3, so DOOM 3 servers have NEW offical content.

DreamCatcher did this with Painkiller, the expansions SP game was still sold but the expansions MP was a free addon, and it WORKS.

Come on id, PLEASE GOD see the light... (No pun intended)

It's not that great. The latest patch was released (patching both VD3 and RoE) and people still piss and moan about lag issues and having no one to play with. :/

#Thats not id's fault. Nobody plays it because its hit. And it lags because there are not enough decent servers, because its shit.

Well, it's been about 7 months to a year since I've last mapped I think. Doesn't matter really. It's been WAY too long!

I came back to brush up on some map making (no pun intended) and did this in GTKRadiant 1.5.0 in around 5 minutes. Quite a few T-Junctions but whatever =)

And good ol' GTKRadiant 1.4.1 is downloaded! Cant stand 1.5 too many bugs right now.

Remove the glass. Transparent surfaces in Doom have to be full bright because of PPL, and that makes glass look odd if its not in a "bright window". Either dim the texture down and add some lights behind it, or just make it metal in form. Stands out way to much.

Looks very nice Scrotch... quiet epic :)
there's that one rivet stud that you've used to texture the bridge support pillar that bugs me :P

when you say its for Q4 - is that even out yet? is it already assumed that its just a D3 "mod" (essentially) ? (not up with the gos)

"have to be full bright because of PPL"

it's not because of n.l shading... they must have just written cheap shaders for their glass. You could easily write your own CG (i think D3 uses that) shader to accomodate for attenuation with transparency.

No, its a Quake 4 map being built on the Doom 3 engine. Which means the same problem will crop up in Quake 4.

Yes, he could just write a program for the glass but not everybody has that knowledge, and is it really worth it?

Ya I was playin with the glass last night trying to give it some light effects but it hasnt turned out yet, this is not final by far so I have quite a bit left to do.

ANd ya its DOOM 3 but Im making these for concepts for a Q4 mod I'd like to get a head start on by having some already completed source material that I can quickly redo.

for this I'll release as a D3 CTF map (finally made up my mind).

That's Doom 3? What are you doing special with the lighting? How does that run? It looks like you've got a lot of light volumes to make it look that bright.

Not doing anything special with the lights I know of, I have alot of them placed all around for smaller details and such. FPS are maxed out at 60fps cap for the most part, theres 1 or 2 spots where it dips to 40 cuz I have some lights over lapping that I gotta tweak. My system is only an AMD 2000+ as well so I dont know how it would run on system with the proper specs.

Really enjoying coming back to this engine after a year, the last thing I was doing was that DM6 remake that I never got time to finish. And this time its something original so its even more fun to put together.
