Map editing/making
Well, after a while of searching, ive come up dry for anything half way decent. I also placed this thread here; seeing as I require help.
I was wondering if anyone here knew of a good map editing or creating utility, for quake 3 arena?
If so, could you please give me the specs and where to get it?
Thanks.

Level Editing & Modeling
You'll find your answer in there alot quicker I would say.

What he said. But, <u>GtkRadiant</u> Is arguably the best tool for Q3. I've used it quite a bit myself. Anyway, head over there and take a look. Bunches of good people there.PieceMaker wrote:I see your in the forum I was going to point out.

Welcome AssembleThis to Q3W LEM!
You can find most of the tool download links in the Getting Started sticky thread:
http://quake3world.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=290
On the second post by AEon, you should see links to GtkRadiant, Q3Map2 and Q3Map2Toolz. Download and install.
"Shader not found"... I'm assuming you downloaded GtkRadiant 1.5.0
First of all check inside your Quake3 install directory. In baseq3, you should see a scripts directory with a bunch of .shader files as well as a shaderlist.txt. If you don't have a "scripts" folder in baseq3, then you may need to download and install the correct Game Packs from qeradiant.com
Check your project settings:
File > Project Settings. For Q3A, make sure the Quake III Arena option is selected.
Check your GtkRadiant Preferences:
Edit > Preferences > Settings > Paths
Make sure Engine Path is set to the directory that contains the quake3.exe file. On my system it's set to C:/Games/Quake III Arena/

Sorry to bump this, but I'm still having problems.
But, I had 1.4.0, in which I went and got the 1.5.0
I checked the 'scripts' directory folder, I have no shaders, but I do have the shaderlist.txt or whatnot.
This might actually be a problem, seeing that I'm supposed to have a bunch of shaders in this folder?
..Where am I supposed to get these?
--larger question; can QuarK be used to make maps for Quake 3 Arena?

I suggest that you use GTKRadiant 1.4.1
Best version imho *gives a thumbs up* =)
Very easy to learn how to use Radiant... never used Quark though.
The majority of Q3 mappers use Radiant though. Stick with Radiant
1.5.0 was REALLY buggy for me. I had a difficult time using it *sigh*
Also... make sure you have Quake III installed so that GTKRadiant will have somewhere to load textures from.

You should open the pk3, and extract all shader and place them in the /baseq3/shader dir, and also the shaderlist.txt...
Q3Map2 2516 -> http://www.zfight.com/misc/files/q3/q3map_2.5.16_win32_x86.zip
Q3Map2 FS_20g -> http://www.zfight.com/misc/files/q3/q3map2_fs_20g.rar
GtkRadiant 140 -> http://www.zfight.com/misc/files/q3/GtkRadiantSetup-1.4.0-Q3RTCWET.exe
Q3Map2 FS_20g -> http://www.zfight.com/misc/files/q3/q3map2_fs_20g.rar
GtkRadiant 140 -> http://www.zfight.com/misc/files/q3/GtkRadiantSetup-1.4.0-Q3RTCWET.exe
Extracting shit from the pk3 is completely unnecessary - if the program has been installed properly then it will be able to read from the pk3s provided the paths are correct. Shaderlist.txt can't even be found in the game's pk3 files.
Most likely you have either:
1. Installed 1.4.0 and just clicked 'Next' without reading any of the dialogues and telling it the game paths. You actually need to pay attention when installing, Radiant is not idiotware
2. Downloaded 1.5.0 without also getting the Q3 media pack at the same time.
There is no such thing as 1.4.1 AFAIK. Version 1.4.0 is the latest non-beta version. I would generally recommend 1.4.0 for newbies, but only because the setup routine is more foolproof, whereas installing 1.5.0 from scratch needs prior knowledge of where the assets go.
