How do I load a custom map?

Post by slovach »

I've never played Q3 since i've always had dial-up. I figured it wasnt worth it and I eventually got cable. Just yesterday did I pick up Q3 and I wanted to look at that incredibly spiffy map The Velvet Yard. I downloaded it, threw it in baseq3 and figured I could just load it with /map, but it's not happening. Am I retarded or am I just doing something wrong here. :icon33:

/map "map's file name"

without the quotes of course.

example

map is called: The Guns of Navarone by Quint (EXCELLENT map btw)

you type:

/map gon

which is the filename.

the filename will be the map to run
no, you can just use "gon" from the filename:

gon.pk3

why would you need to open it? that's not simpler.

many times? i've got literally hundreds of maps on cd's and have never run across a .pk3 that couldn't be called upon with /map.

Exactly, just type /dir maps in the quake 3 console.

For the record, I've run across pk3s where the bsp and pk3 had different names and had to dig into it to find the name.

/dir maps shows the .bsp names, not the pk3 names

but wouldnt' that only happen if the author screwed up? and there can be more than one .bsp per map? i'm not a mapper, so you tell me.

Ina manner of speaking, yeah it would be a bad decision on the mappers part. A mistake yes, but it does happen. Also yes there can be more than one bsp in a pk3 file. For example, zz-osp-pak0.pk3 has 13 bsps in it. From ospca1.bsp to ospdm9.bsp. You obviously don't use that pk3 name to bring them up.

yeah, but that's ONLY for mappacks. i won't be calling up an entire mappack anyway.

thx for clarification.

Instead of memorizing bsp names and typing them into the console by hand, you can also simply go

Single Player --> Skirmish ---> then you will see preview shots of all maps, including the custom maps, and start them very comfortably with the according self-explaining menue buttons.

unfortunately, there's a limit to the number of maps displayed which is somewhere around 100(?).

Mapman is what you want if you have boatloads of customs.
