Formatting

Post by corpse »

I am trying to reinstall XP Home for a friend, but after the initial boot and stuff and I click to format using NTFS, it just sits there forever at 0% formated.

It is a dell laptop and I am using the DEll setup disk with XP Home on it.

I have also tried my copy of XP home and it does the same thing.

I left it on today for a couple of hours [formatting] and when I looked in on it, it said "Windows cannot format this drive, etc.

I had the same thing happen while trying to install Win2000 on my mother in laws pc. Except it would hang at 12%. Nothing I tried would work. Ended up putting one of my extra drives in it. I tried using the utility disk from the manu. site, Fdisk, and a few other things. It was a brand new drive btw, never formatted before.

Sounds like a damaged drive. Consider replacing it.

Torms correct. run a drive checker proggie on it. it'll probably look pretty terrible.
