How do I? Some people have servers that are always online and working.

That's because the computers which host them are always online and working.

The servers you're referring to are hosted on dedicated internet server machines... just like the machines used to host websites. This website, for example, is hosted on a dedicated server housed in a data center somewhere in the US.

Servers are basically the same thing as your home PC, but in a different shape case, typically more powerful with a lot more RAM and hard drive capacity. So you can host web pages off them, but you can also fire up a Q3 server and leave it running.

So, they just have special computers that run 24/7? How long do you think you'd let an average computre run non-stop?

Not all computers are created equal.

A cheap laptop will fail quickly if you leave it on for extended periods of time... they don't stay cool so well and the heat gradually destroys the hard drive, CPU and other components.

A cheap PC is much the same.

Higher end PCs can run non-stop all year without problems.

But bear in mind they don't just have special computers, they're housed in special data centres with air conditioning, uninterruptable power supplies, advanced fire protection systems... not to mention extremely high-bandwidth connections to the internet, often straight into an Internet Backbone.

If you're wanting to run a server from home, the noise of the PC, the amount of money it costs you in powering the PC, the use of your connection, and the bandwidth restrictions made by your ISP will all be a factor.

Server 2003 can have years of uptime. All the boxes we ran at work were flawless for the year I was there.

Windows stability isn't an issue anymore. It was back with 98, NT and perhaps 2000 as well.

Average Computer..... 24/7, my machines run 24/7 constantly.. *shrug

I turn mine off because the fans piss me off when I try and sleep.

Also the cost in electricity is notable.

Meh, my electric bill goes up maybe 5 bucks a month if i NEVER shut it off..
