Who created the official maps?

Post by Foo »

I remember there being a topic here before the board got wiped, but can't find it now.

There are individual credits for the Q3 maps (Q3DM0-19, Tourneys, probably TA too), and I'd like to know who made each level.

Anyone got that info?

" id Software's Tim Willits gives a clarification about the "authors"
for each level in Quake III Arena:"

"Many people want to know which level designer designed which map.
This is not exactly an easy question to answer. Unlike previous id games
the designers are not separate individuals working on "their" maps without
cooperation from anyone else. In order for a company to create truly great
maps all the designers must learn to work together. The team of designers
we have now is by far the best team originated group that has ever worked
at id. There are no maps in Quake3 that were developed by only one person.
Some maps were touched by as many as four different people. Expect this
design trend to continue and look forward to id creating some of the best
maps around."

Paul Jaquays, Christian Antkow, Tim Willets

Off the top of my head were the 3 'core' level designers.

Tim Willits did tourney6 on his own (maybe someone else did the texturing though). He did the map as a challenge. He said he could do a fun map in under an hour. The original design of tourney6 was built and compiled in under an hour, and it was so much fun, they decided to polish it and include it in Q3.

It's kind of sad to see how few of the names in this list are well known names.

Back in the Q2 and Q3 days I could probably name the entire team. Now there's so many people whose name I haven't even ever seen before.

Yeah they hired a whole bunch of people. Understandably so, even that team would probably seem small when compared to others making next-gen titles.
