Wouldn't mind some advice for upgrades

Post by Scarface »

Well, my mobo just melted ( literally, i'll post pic tomorrow ). So i figure instead of just replacing my mobo, i'm going to do an upgrade.

This is what I'm looking at:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+ ( socket 939 ) - $239.95
MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum ( nForce 4 Ultra ) - $169.95
Kingston Hyperx dual ddr pc3200 1GB - $214.95
Antec True power 550w psu - $149.95

Total: $774.80 CAD

The only thing i'm wondering, is if i should fork out the extra cash for the AMD X2 3800+.

Honestly? I think around the 3000 mark is a good level to aim at currently. The faster processors don't justify the price tags and nothing needs the speed right now.

The level you've aimed at looks very good. The PSU is a good choice and should stay you through some upgrades.

The motherboard is based on a good chipset... but I would urge you to look at getting an SLi-capable motherboard and a single SLi-capable card right now... there is a window of opportunity for massive graphics headroom right now if you get this setup then purchase a better pair of cards further down the line when they're cheaper. What's more, there's no cost penalty in hedging your bet and going with the SLi-capable option.

The Asus AN8-SLI Deluxe would be a great choice for motherboard.

It is indeed. I picked that one :)

The sound onboard is pure shite though. I put my SB Live back in.

The price on the 3500+ dropped a little while ago while the 3000+ and 3200+ did not. So, in USD, it's only about $35 more now, I think. Definitely worth it for another 200MHz.

If it wasnt for the fact your mobo had melted iwould have said wait.
Your MSI board is amazing. I have the same one in 754 format
I would go for a slightly quicker processor as the money jump isnt that much

Alrighty, decided to go with the AMD 64 3500+, but i'm gunna stick with the msi neo4 platnium.

What about memory, will 1gb of dual ddr be enough?

Also the kingston timing is 2-3-2-6-1. I can get 1gb dual ddr by ocz for the same price which is 2-2-2-5. What's the difference mean?

Im upgrading again too.. have 1 gig now.. yeah, im going 2 gigs.. theres just no reason not to, and with your 1 gig set being stupid high priced, you can get 2 gigs of nice OCZ for around the same price..

It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.

I am now sick.

Great choice of PSU... Antec's rock solid.

I currently have 4x512MB PC3200 of OCZ enhanced latency RAM 2-3-3-6. Price is now ridiculously cheap. I bought 2 sticks less than a year ago that cost me $300, then purchased the same stuff (rev.3) a few months ago for $160 (CND). Bought it from NCIX.com

What videocard do you have?

I'll be probably be getting 4x512 dual ddr ocz pc3200 2-2-2-5. As for the vid card, I have a whimpy gf4 ti4200, it'll need to go once I get the msi board, and in with probably a pci-e 6600 gt

Just built my son a rig with the MSI K8N Neo4. Rock solid board. I also grabbed the AMD 64 3200 Venice core and got a stable O/c of 400MHz with factory cooling.

Also, instead of a full boar upgrade, i went with a moderate one that'll last me about a year or so:

mobo: Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe $70 USD

cpu: XP 3200+ 400fsb $110 USD

memory: 2GB OCZ 3200 dual ddr: $292 USD

Unsure about the video card as of yet.

The cpu and mobo are in the mail, the other are going to wait for a bit. Not bad pricing for top of the line stuff about 1 year ago :icon14:

I loved my gigabyte board, just can't believe it farted out like this. The main reason i'm not doing a full "up to date" upgrade is because I have to buy an engine for my integra.

Heard great things about the a7n8x-e deluxe board, and for the price i couldn't go wrong.

What engine are you getting for the integra? B18c3?

probably a b18c1, really want the c5 tho or even a k20 block, but the price doesn't justify the power.

why dont you opt and get the B18c3? 220hp, and it will go right in.. then you have a B16 port and polished head on it ( STOCK )

meh

price of a b18c3 motor with tranny at 75,000 km, is $5800 CAD. same options for a b18c1 is $3800 CAD.

quite a big difference
