cant connect 8(

Post by Zyte »

When i connect to osp servers, i get kicked back to the menu lately. This happens with osp servers, but not all, since i can still play on reerfsurfers which runs osp too.

The condump gives a mix of: .dll load failure, wrong game folder, restricted demo mode and files not on the pure list :icon32: I have no idea what causes it.

Anyways, here's the condump

C:\GAMES\Quake III Arena\baseq3\6++.pk3 (9 files)
C:\GAMES\Quake III Arena/baseq3

Do you have two baseq3 folders?!
Seems like you have two different paths to the folder.

Running in restricted demo mode.
That's the cause. Are the pak[0-8].pk3 files in your baseq3/ directory and do they have the right permissions (i.e. are they readable by quake3.exe)?

They indeed are in the baseq3 folder. I checked each pak and they are all readable.

Try the following:

- Reinstall the game to the default folder, regardless of which folder it is in now.
  • 1) From the Control Panel select Add/Remove Programs.
    2) Select Quake III Arena from the list, then remove.
    3) Use My Computer to locate the Quake III directory. By default this is C:\Program Files\Quake III Arena.
    4) Delete this folder.
    5) Reinstall the game into the default folder using the maximum install option.
- Download and install the latest Point Release 1.32

ehm.. is there a less destructive way?

Misantropia, if you are certain it is about the pak1-8.pk3 files in baseq3/, and not about any of the mod files, wouldnt it be better to replace the existing pak files with older ones from a backup cd, so i can keep my osp - and other mod's - settings intact?

my problem was a corrupt pak0.pk3
Foo wrote:There's a problem with your pak0.pk3 file ax. Might have become slightly corrupted, might have had a file added (virus? Just a guess), but whatever it causing it, it looks like the file is failing a hash check.

Download this file:
http://digestit.kennethballard.com/download.html (install, then right-click on pak0.pk3 and choose 'hash')
The MD5 of the file should be:

thanks ax! Ill try it tomorrow, hope i'll be able to rumble again :]

I have no idea wth should have caused this though, i never edit/rename/delete or whatsoever with the paks, and i dont use custom models or skinds of any kind. Also im pretty sure my pc is clean. buh.

You can just select reinstall, backup configs, and reapply 1.32. Everything else should stay intact.

What Cooldown said or, alternatively, copy pak0.pk3 from your CD and install the 1.32 PR. No need to backup anything since the installer doesn't touch custom config files.

That MD5 list is awesome. I've added an article for them in the wiki: http://fps-media.com/q3wiki/index.php?title=MD5

I've taken the liberty to fix a few spelling and style errors plus I added a bit about *NIX and md5sum. :)

Cheers gents.

It's starting to come together now I'm dedicating a little time to it every week.
