ways to make xp less crap with usb drives

Post by 4days »

put xp on my home machine last month because i figured it was about time i did, and it's been okay so far - as patronising as a kids tv presenter communicating solely with plush tools and as intuitive as somebody elses kitchen, but okay.

..except for usb drives, mostly it just forgets my usb 2 external HD exists and refuses to acknowledge it. every now and again it works for a bit, then fails to copy files with a 'parameter incorrect' message. same thing happens with a usb 2 mp3 player but less so.

the drive and mp3 player both work fine on the 2k and gentoo partitions and there aren't any specific xp drivers for the drive as far as i can tell. it's a legit copy of xp and it's up to date.

this could well be a dumb problem to be having, but i've never had to think about usb devices before and i'm a total noob to xp. asked a couple of folks round here and they've had similar problems but no proper solution.

anyone know if there's a specific trick to making external usb HDs work reliably with xp?

a few laptops we have here reset the usb devices to off and every boot we have to enable usb.
sadly no one at work has faith in me flashing to a newer bios .. their loss.
