Fastest Software firewall?

Post by Foo »

I'm experiencing problems with Kerio Personal Firewall at the moment Specifically, I run an occasional FTP server on my LAN for when we need files moving around, and transfers on the FTP are dog-slow (like 50k/s).

Previously, with the same FTP client and server setup, I've been able to pull 7Mb/s from 100Mbit, and 700k/s from 10Mbit...

I think it's the firewall. I used to run a *very* old version of kerio, then updated to the newer versions, after which the problems started. I think it might also be restricting my bittorrent speeds too, but I can't verify that.

Anyone have a solution for a faster firewall? Zonealarm is slow from experience, but I haven't tried Sygate. Are there any OS firewalls available for Windows?

Failing this, I'll go back to the old old kerio FW I guess :(

As an aside, I'm running the latest Kerio on my machine, and it hasn't caused any speed problems with my ftp server, so you might want to check for any other things that might be interfering, if you haven't already.

edit: That is, I didn't notice any speed changes from the old version to the new version. I still don't like the new version as much as the old though. It was better when it was simple, basic and lightweight.

I like Outpost Firewall Pro... also, the new Sygate Personal Firewall which has already took ages in development is being hyped as very light on resources. There is a beta that might be found if you search their forums a bit. Right now it's probably on track for a sometime in 2006 release.

Hrm I need to look at other factors then I guess.

It's possible it only happened after switching motherboards (and I'm using onboard network interfaces now instead of a dedicated netgear card). I guess that might do it.

Kerio will soon be discontinued, and not long after that unsupported.

Like others have suggested, you may want to give Sygate a shot.
