This defrag takes 20 mins or less when done everyday, I schedule it for when I'm nearly never on. It may take longer if I've fragmented my HD up a fair amount over the day.Tormentius wrote:Agreed. Once a week is even overkill IMO. Once a month is more than enough and the built-in defrag app does the trick just fine (and eliminates another background process such as the one Diskeeper leaves active).+JuggerNaut+ wrote:btw, isn't a DAILY defrag a bit overkill?

What do you think of Norton SystemWorks 2006?
Is there a feature that will allow one to run a scheduled PC diagnostic program? I realize it would entail an additional process running in the background, but as long as it doesn't suck up too many resources I remain interested.
Thoughts?

I used an older version of systemworks and it was a resource hog. Apparently, little has changed since then.

I used to use an virus scanner (AVG), never had a virus so once after formatting (which I do every 6-12 months) I didn't reinstall it. The only thing I ever do is run the Windows defrag tool. Every 2 months or so. As long as you're not installing and uninstalling lots of stuff, I've found it just doesn't get very fragmented.
I enabled Windows Firewall, and I'm behind a router with a firewall so I'm good on that front.

Progress report...
The Diskeeper software has been great (as far as I can tell), not a resource hog, doesn't ever bother me. Simply runs it's process for one hour every day (scheduled) when I'm not on. In the past week or two, I've moved around a good many gigs and installed my fair share of software. Yet when I occassionally check the defragmentation level of the HD, it's consistently low. The system has remained perky, slowing down only when the physical ram fills up or when programs screw up (or crash).

Minor gains, but nothing that makes it worth doing.

Play something that really uses the HD for stuffs..

[size=75][i]I once had a glass of milk.
It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.
I am now sick.

Re: Fast Defrag 2 Professional
Lose Norton AV, any sys I installed that POS on I got what I call system hickups, short (1 or 2 secs) of system lag/slowdown.Massive Quasars wrote:It's a ram defragger. Any good? Seems to cause sporadic system slow downs, though that may be caused by any number of other programs.
nowadays i use Avast antivirus, Zone alarm for firewall (takes a bit of manual sys maitenance), and Spybot S&D for anti spyware. No troubles whatsoever. but then again i do not venture into pr0n/Kazaa or any other highrisk areas of the shitternet

Best not to assume...Hr.O wrote:but then again i do not venture into pr0n/Kazaa or any other highrisk areas of the shitternet
Norton AV uses a little more resources but it's served me well, no problems with the version I'm using. I hate ZoneAlarm, I'll stick to Sygate.
Defragging doesn't offer much performance increase for some, for others it drastically improves - it all depends on what you use your PC for.
But even if it doesn't give you any performance gain, you should always run it at least semi-regularly, as it will increase the life of your hard drive. The more fragmented a drive gets, the more it has to run all over the platter to read data. Over a long period of time that will wear out the moving parts in your drive faster, which are what almost always go bad when a drive fails. It may not be a huge difference, but it's worth the minimal time it takes to schedule defrags to run when you're not around.

affermative on the firewall, but regarding norton, just try you can allways reinstall. I can't realy point to as why Norton messes up, but on open-GL games i play(ed) i had troubles, and replacing norton solved it each and every time.Massive Quasars wrote:Best not to assume...Hr.O wrote:but then again i do not venture into pr0n/Kazaa or any other highrisk areas of the shitternet

[edit] i did assume, since it's pretty hard not to get into some highrisk areas sometimes. avoiding them lessens the risk (fi. i regard site as somethingawfull and nowadays even qeradiant.com as risky sites. They slap you around with large trouts full off adds, popups, and as a bonus; crates full of cookies)[/edit]
