Jack Thompson is making an ass out of himself once again! :olo:

Many of you probably know that Jack Thompsom is the crazy lawyer who is on a crusade against violent videogames. He's at it again.

He has actually sent an open letter to the games industry in which he challenges the industry to create a certain video game. If someone does it, he'd donate $10,000 to charity. Read about it here.

It's completely outrageous. He's going nutter.

Now then, Gabe of Penny Arcade can be a motherfucker as well. He's actually mailed Jack Thompson saying that $10,000 is a kind of poor amount considering that Child's Play (something which the PA guys have organised to get sick kids some special presents for christmas) brought up a total of over $500,000 dollar. Thompson's response was pretty much outrageous.

Read about it here.

And check the accompanying cartoon :smirk:

What's really fucked up is the plot for that loonball's "game".

"Osaki Kim is the father of a high school boy beaten to death with a baseball bat by a 14-year-old gamer. The killer obsessively played a violent video game in which one of the favored ways of killing is with a bat. The opening scene, before the interactive game play begins, is the Los Angeles courtroom in which the killer is sentenced "only" to life in prison after the judge and the jury have heard experts explain the connection between the game and the murder.

Osaki Kim (O.K.) exits the courtroom swearing revenge upon the video game industry whom he is convinced contributed to his son's murder. "Vengeance is mine, I will repay" he says. And boy, is O.K. not kidding.

O.K. is provided in his virtual reality playpen a panoply of weapons: machetes, Uzis, revolvers, shotguns, sniper rifles, Molotov cocktails, you name it. Even baseball bats. Especially baseball bats.

O.K. first hops a plane from LAX to New York to reach the Long Island home of the CEO of the company (Take This) that made the murder simulator on which his son's killer trained. O.K. gets "justice" by taking out this female CEO, whose name is Paula Eibel, along with her husband and kids. "An eye for an eye," says O.K., as he urinates onto the severed brain stems of the Eibel family victims, just as you do on the decapitated cops in the real video game Postal2.

O.K. then works his way, methodically back to LA by car, but on his way makes a stop at the Philadelphia law firm of Blank, Stare and goes floor by floor to wipe out the lawyers who protect Take This in its wrongful death law suits. "So sue me" O.K. spits, with singer Jackson Brown's 1980's hit Lawyers in Love blaring.

With the FBI now after him, O.K. keeps moving westward, shooting up high-tech video arcades called GameWerks. "Game over," O.K. laughs.

Of course, O.K. makes the obligatory runs to virtual versions of brick and mortar retailers Best Buy, Circuit City, Target, and Wal-Mart to steal supplies and bludgeon store managers and cash register clerks. "You should have checked kids' IDs!"

O.K. pushes on to Los Angeles. He must get there by May 10, 2006. That is the beginning of "E3" -- the Electronic Entertainment Expo -- the Super Bowl of the video game industry. O.K. must get to E3 to massacre all the video game industry execs with one final, monstrously delicious rampage."

This fucker's not only loopy, he's fucking stupid. Note that the murder victim in the game scenario is "Paula Eibel" chair of "Take This", modeled of course after Take Two Ineractive's head, Paul Eibler.

Yeah, for a guy rallying against violence in games he sure wants to make a crazy violent one himself. At least in most games the violence is put into context, not here though.

lol

He'll give $10,000. What a retard.

In an age where games cost anywhere from 1 to 10 million dollars to produce that doesn't even cover the M&Ms consumed during production....or the dancing girls at every designer's desk.

I propose we launch Operation: Make Jack a Martyr. Let's go beat him to death with baseball bats, and then say "Gee, sorry Jack, guess you were right." :olo:

Since I've been playing shooters since they first came out...AAAAANNNND I actually make these games....the CIA has contacted me and want to hire me as an assassin.

All those years of button mashing has trained me specifically in the art of field-stripping an AW50 sniper rifle as well as accounting for ballistic arc and wind.

Since (in Far Cry) I can nail a guy in the head from 1200 metres away by simply pressing the space bar to hold my breath...this should be an easy job.

In other Jack Thompson news, a few days ago the American "National Institute on Media and the Family" (an organization also having concerns about violent videogames, but actually doing research into the matter in cooperation with game developers and being much more civilized about it in general) has said they don't want to have anything to do with Thompson and thus don't want him using their name. (read)

Thompson again, has responded that he has never claimed that he had the backing of the NIMF and that the man behind the organisation is more interested in maintaining good relationships with game developers and the distribution networks of those games rather than using his expertise in the matter to do something about the (supposed) negative effects of violent games on people. (read)

Additionally, Thompson's anti-game industry game has actually been made in the form of a text-adventure game based on the original Zork game. (read)

edit:
for those of you who can't be bothered clicking links, here's the game in SWF format

Jack likes to use the phrase "you can't say with a straight face..." a LOT. I began to secretly make distorted, Kabuki theater expressions as I spoke to him, just to see if it were true.

r3tina pointed this out to me:

You know what, Jack? We're going to be the men you're not. You said that your insulting, illusory ten thousand dollars would go to the charity of Paul Eibeler's choice. We've got a good guess that he'd direct your nonexistant largesse toward The Entertainment Software Association Foundation, a body that has raised over six point seven million dollars over the last eight years. We've just made the donation you never would, and never meant to. Ten thousand dollars' worth. And we made it in your name.

the ironic thing is, he'll prolly get shot by some gamer frustrated with his rediculous antics. and then he'll say he was right all along :dork:

Right. For a mere moment there I was puzzled at the example of jack thompson saying something after being shot, but then I realised that shot doesn't mean killed :icon32:

this just in, Jack Thompson has called the cops Penny Arcade accusing them of harrassment:

http://www.livejournal.com/users/gamepo ... 10152.html
The simmering controversy over anti-game crusader Jack Thompson's controverisal $10,000 donation offer took an ugly turn this morning. The Miami attorney has tried to enlist the efforts of the Seattle Police Department in a dust-up with gamer website Penny Arcade.

In a letter faxed to Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske (left), Thompson says, in part, "A Seattle business by the name of Penny Arcade... employs certain personnel who have decided to commence and orchestrate criminal harassment of me by various means... This company has done this because I dared to go on CBS's 60 Minutes in March and again in July to explain a wrongful death lawsuit I have brought on behalf of two police officers and a police dispatcher in Fayette, Alabama, who were shot in the head and killed by Devin Moore who obsessively trained on Grand Theft Auto: Vice City to kill them."

Someone really needs to bring a case against the guy for harrasment + public nuisance. Wasting police time would be applicable too.

My god, what a steaming crock of shit. I do hope the cops tell him to get fucked.

"who obsessively trained on Grand Theft Auto: Vice City to kill them."

What the fuck? Vice City is hardly fucking realistic... You shoot somebody, they die. The similarities end there.

more like, you shoot someone 3 times with a m60, and maybe theyll die.

btw penny arcade said a lot of people were asking them for Thompsons email & phone nr, but they wouldnt give it out because thats not right to do.
they did however post a link to a VGCats page that *does* have all the info :icon32:

But's that's Thompson's logic in a nutshell. All violent videogames are murder simulators.
What's really nuts is that his allegation about what the guys at PA have "done to him" is totally off the mark. He's just trying to spin things to make it seems as though they're attacking him for his lawsuit, not his insane behavior.
