I got a buddy with a computer that the power suppy fan has stopped working and the computer won't come on. The power light comes on, but the screen stays black.
I suspect the power supply is dead, but what I want to know is this: His computer has the main power supply switch to the motherboard PLUS a smaller one also to the motherboard.
Is it safe to use a power supply that has only the one main connection to the motherboard just to test and see if the computer will boot?
Power Suppy
Then it should be safe. As long as the number of pins match up between the PSU and the motherboard, it's just to plug it in and give it a try. I take it that the smaller 4-pin connector isn't located right next to the big 20-pin one? The 4-pin one is just there for "extra stability", it should be able to boot without it.
Just don't try to connect a 20-pin connector AND the extra 4-pin connector from an older non-ATX2 PSU into the 24-pin connector of a ATX2 motherboard.
