Getting the most FPS I can...
Getting the most FPS I can...
My system specs are as follows:
P4 2.8g 800 fsb
1 gig pc3200 ram
ATI x850 pro 256 mb
What settings in the console can I adjust to give me the smoothest gameplay? I sometimes drop to 10 fps during action. I'm used to playing Q3 with a constant 125 fps and being as smooth as can be.

Give this config file a try: http://www.inevitabledemise.com/td/q4/
I have pretty similar specs:dzjepp wrote:Give this config file a try: http://www.inevitabledemise.com/td/q4/
AMD Athlon XP 3200+ (Barton)
2Gb Ram
x800 XT PE (AGP)
Ive lowered my vid settings as low as they go (800x600) ..used that cfg (looks like shit) and my fps still drops to 10-15 whenever I go into a flagroom with 5 ppl in it.
What gives?
I had a very similar problem, drove me up the wall, until I noticed that it was only when numerous sounds were playing simutaneously that I was being dropped to 10 fps.... Here's what fixed it for me:shaft wrote:I have pretty similar specs:dzjepp wrote:Give this config file a try: http://www.inevitabledemise.com/td/q4/

Go into your Sound Settings and DISABLE OpenAL. I had this enabled, which apparently isnt (fully?) compatible with my Audigy 2 ZS. As soon as I disabled it the game felt like it could breathe again.
Let me know if this helps... it may be worth adding this to a more prominent thread as I imagine it could be plaguing several people.
The console command is:
seta s_useOpenAL "0"
It has nothing to do with the graphics card, the game is just very CPU intensive when there are lots of players on the server - especially when they're all in the same room shooting at each other.Oeloe wrote:Give me a break. The graphics card can draw the scene at a higher framerate, and it would, if you had a faster CPU that could serve it with enough data faster.

I'd have to agree. I have an AMD XP 3000+, 6800 GT 128MB, 1GB Ram and I seldom dip below 60fps. I benchmark at 79.5fps using a standard demo with about 8 people on. Of course, I have antialiasing either off or way down and I play at 8x6 on High Quality but I turn off shadows!!Grudge wrote:Oeloe wrote:Give me a break. An XP 3200+ limiting a X850 to 10 fps... Specs:

Stutters sometimes as u go into a new room, but apart from that its very playable imo

I got 49.45 fps in that timedemo. I really think that demo is tame compared to what its like 8vs8 CTF when you go into a flagroom.

I checked that..it was already disabled

I have the same behaivour in MP. Dropping as low as 10-20fps witha few players on screen, no matter my res and detail.
To test my frame rate oddness in mp i created a server (rules out server lag) and went to the same spot in a largish map.
640 x 480 low, averything off
http://homes.jcu.edu.au/~jc131364/low.jpg
1280 x 1024 everything on except AA
http://homes.jcu.edu.au/~jc131364/high.jpg
1 fps gain at the lower settings? somethings amiss i think.
I know the two shots aren't in exactly the same spot (and my fov is increased in the 1280 one) but if anything this should make the fps difference more pronounced.
my system specs -
A64 300+ Venice @ 2.3
7800GT
2gb RAM

Damn, I'm going to those same specs pretty much
A64 3800+ (dual core though, hopefully that will help some, but I doubt much)
2gb OCZ 2-3-2-5
7800GT
I sure as hell hope I can do better than 40fps in an empty room.
I wonder if creating your own server and playing it kills your framerates any. It didn't really in Q3, but who knows?

That spot is brutal, I get massive framedrop when I walk through there on an empty server also.
I hear ya....
I have the exact same system as you:
2.8 GHZ P4.
1 GIG RAM
X850 PRO 256MB
Audigy 4
And the FPS are TERRIBLE in mp and sometimes in sp... just not acceptable.
My fps are the same weather my setting are on low or high. SOMETHING IS WRONG. PATCH.
