It's a form of abnormal brain development that occurs in about 40 out of 10,000 births. The more severe cases (resulting in cyclops) are rarer, but they do happen, in animals, too. I'd suppose about 1/100,000 births are cyclopses, and the global birth rate is what, 200,000 per day? (Guessing)
So, about two born per day.
So, about two born per day.

Umm... that's.. a.. good.. question...l0g1c wrote:lol, why didn't they just say 1 out of 250 births?werldhed wrote:It's a form of abnormal brain development that occurs in about 40 out of 10,000 births.
That seems like a lot.
Actually, I can explain, but I figured there wasn't a point in being too technical to begin with, since the point of this thread is really just "look at how gross this is." and not "what are the medical aspects of this?"
Cyclopia itself isn't as common as 1 in 250. In fact, the less severe forms of the abnormal brain development aren't, either. I mistyped and should have said 40 in 10000 pregnancies (i.e. some resulting in miscarriages). The site where I got the stats (because, let's be honest, I don't know this shit off the top of my head :icon26: ) says the rate of live births is 6-12 out of 10000 births. The other numbers -- incidence of severe cyclopia and birthrate -- I just estimated myself. So it's not really 1 in 250 births are cyclops. Just that many pregnancies result in underdeveloped brains.
[/boring statistics] :icon29:
And yes, they're fucking ugly and if my girlfriend gave birth to one I think I'd scream in horror like a little bitch. Look for closeup photos of some -- they're nasty

I'm no doctor but I hear Downs Syndrome occurs 1 in every 500 births or so. That seems quite common as well if the numbers are right.l0g1c wrote:lol, why didn't they just say 1 out of 250 births?werldhed wrote:It's a form of abnormal brain development that occurs in about 40 out of 10,000 births.

I guess that explains Sucrak.
I checked out another site, and it also said 1/250 pregnancies.
And interestingly, if I remember my classes well enough, Downs syndrome is often the cause of cyclopia, so it does happen quite often
edit: fuck, I'm even boring myself. I'll shut up, now. :icon32:

Ah, that makes more sense when coupled with the 6-12 out of 10,000. I know you weren't referencing the amount of one-eyes themselves, but I am always suspicious of divisible statistics, hehe. Thanks for the explanation. :icon14:werldhed wrote:Umm... that's.. a.. good.. question...l0g1c wrote:lol, why didn't they just say 1 out of 250 births?werldhed wrote:It's a form of abnormal brain development that occurs in about 40 out of 10,000 births.
