Quake 4 Multiplayer

Post by f00dl3 »

Anyone know how I can get the Q4 in-game server browser to detect servers? Do I have to allow quake4.exe to allow other people to connect to my computer's filesystem (act as a server) in order to get MP to work?

I don't want to spend money on a server browser (i.e. Gamespy, Kali, etc...)

Or is there just no servers out there?

When I try to find games it says getting list of like 500+ servers, but only 1 or 2 show up and usualy they are empty.

That's quite odd actually.
Loads of servers should be showing up.

Do you have a software firewall installed?

And you aren't filtering the results?

I have Zone Alarm Standard 5.x installed. Should I allow Q4 to act as a server? I have it set to allow Q4 access to the Internet right now. Maby I'll try allowing servers - although I hate doing this because servers mean someone else can have access to your machine.

Yes, you need to allow Q4 that access, and no, no one is going to gain access to your machine because you give Q4 the power to send information to the net... ;)

Ok. Got that fixed.

How do I use PunkBuster? I agreed to the EULA however, it won't let me enable it in the settings. Do I have to re-install Quake 4?

You mean it wasn't already enabled? Are you sure you installed it during the install?

If so, I guess you'll need to navigate to your quake 4 folder
Default:
C:\Program Files\id software\Quake 4\q4base

Open Quake4Config.cfg with wordpad
Find this line:
seta cl_punkbuster

set the value to 1.
ex:
seta cl_punkbuster "1"

Save and your good.

Or you can do it the easy way, and go into the Options menu and turn it on. ;)

He said it wouldn't let him... Maybe it's not installed?

Oh, I missed that.

If you opted not to install it during the Q4 install, maybe there is a way. Look on your CDs and see if there is a PB setup somewhere and try installing it that way. It'd be a pain in the ass to go through that install again if you didn't have to.

No installer, he'd just have to copy the pb file from the \Setup\Data folder on the cd to his root Quake 4 folder.

Wonder why then even give the option to not install?

I'm at work right now so I can't look at my install, but is there not a pb directory under Q4base that needs to be created too?

Nope, nothing in there.

There are a few wayward pb related dlls in the root q4 folder though. Wonder if they were created with the install or upon starting the game.

There should be a folder called "pb" in your root q4 folder. If not it's most likely PunkBuster is not properly installed.

What's the purpose of Punk Buster, anyhow? From my knowledge, it's a marketing program?

I read in the EULA that it transmits process tables of the victim's --errr clients computer. Is it possible that one could snatch --errr verify someone's credit card number if someone in the same network segment makes an online transaction? How does this trojan ---errr program work?

Okay.
1. Giving a program 'server' rights in zonealarm does not mean giving it access to your file system. It already has that. What 'server' mode means is that the program will make connections which are initiated from somewhere else *to* your computer rather than from your computer *to* somewhere else. This has nothing to do with your file system.

2. Punkbuster is an anti-cheat measure.

Yes, it's going to steal your credit card information, leave the toilet seat up, and in all probability rape your dog.

read about it.
