SP question - medics

So I'm not very far into the game yet...at the part when the demo guy is going to plant charges and you have to protect him.
Anyhow, there is a medic waiting back at the main doorway to the place, and I was figuring I could go back to him to heal up between planting charges. But when I get to him, he won't heal me. I thought the medics would load you up just by standing in front of them...

Also - all those little control panels with the things that look like hearts growing off of them...is there something you are supposed to do with those?

Medics don't always heal, to make a medic heal you u have to press fire on him or press fire on the tech dude to give u armor.

The heart things are used later on in the game, don't worry about them now.

I'm on waste managment so far, I hear it's almost done. Great game
