Nvidia 81.85 and crash to desktop?

Post by GODLIKE »

Anybody else getting a sudden drop to the desktop between rounds of multiplayer, or when you hit ESC to jump out to the ingame menus?

It's not consistant.. and seems to be a little bit worse when PB is enabled.. but I could be imagining that..

Still, it is kind of annoying to come in late for one of every four DM games, cos I have to reload the game..

When it drops to desktop, gamma is all weird.. kind of like some Q3 crashes I once had, a million years ago.

Download this:

Every time it crashes and your gamma is messed up, run it. Also run it when you use the editor and it makes windows mega bright.

It just restores it to how it was before.

The gamma oddity is something many people get with OpenGL-based games, nothing to worry about although it is inconvenient. You can cure it by loading and unloading any Open-GL-based program gracefully (such as Windows Pipes screensaver).

I'm afraid I don't know about the crash problem.

I was having the game crash to desktop at weird times as well, but it seems to be fixed since I sorted out my memory issues, so I assumed it had to do with that.

It's working fine on my 81.85 drivers now. I've got a 7800GT.

Those drivers are beta, correct?

I believe they're still in beta, yea.

I would double-check on nvidia's site, but it's always so ridiculously slow. >:E

It looks like they WHQL certified them a few days ago and are now in the official release section: http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_81.85.html

Yea, I'm running the WHQL certified ones, but I wasn't sure if that meant they were final or not, necessarily.

Well they don't post beta drivers via nvidia.com, only on nzone.com :p

But I didn't download them from either of those sites. :icon32:

nvidia's site is a slow POS.

Thx for the gamma fix... The issue IS definately more pronounced with PB; I'm beginning to suspect DEP or something..

(BFG 7800 GTX OC, OCZ Gold VX, Asus A8N-SLI Luxe, AMD X2 3800+, Audigy2 ZS, Seagate Sata2 8MB-200GB, etc, etc)

Yeah, im getting the same problem as you with a 6800GT. Some servers I have no issue with. I think it is relating to PB also, not sure though. Let me know if you ever find a fix. I like the game and all, it's jsut a pain in the ass when it crashes to desktop for no reason.

Game is still a blast though.

Found a fix for the crashing...

Not the video driver, i rolled back to an old driver and got the same problem. I am assuming you are behind a router, because I was experiencing the same trouble as I am behind a router.

I forwarded port 24349 for punk buster and i havnt got kicked out yet.

Actually, I'm on the same LAN segment as the server.. so that's not it, for me.. but I bet that may help somebody else. Activision support is recommending I download a new sound driver...

Run dxdiag and see if you can find any errors when you export the text file.
