uninstall old video card drivers
shut off computer
remove and replace video card
reboot
install as directed the video card drivers that
are on the supplied cdrom
do as directed
after a reboot go the video cards makers website and upgrade to the newest video card drivers.
play quake4

{quoting axbaby}
uninstall old video card drivers
reboot
force install of M$ standard pci gfx(svga) card (even if it was an AGP one)
reboot
shut off computer
remove and replace video card
reboot
install as directed the video card drivers that
are on the supplied cdrom
do as directed
after a reboot go the video cards makers website and upgrade to the newest video card drivers.
play quake4

Ax, that won't allways work. See 'bold' addition for save and sound way (read: non ati/nvidia way).

explanation: i got my system flat on it's back when removing old GF2MX and replacing it with a Matrox parhelia. Got things to work with rolling back to standard pci (svga) card and then start matrox setup app. (w/o it wouldn't even recognise the card)

with XP i've been lucky with plug and pray.
can't say i've tried a matrox card though ,not even sure there is native xp support for it.

so i have to agree with you , you may need to use the old standard vga method Hr.O mentions.
