PC quake on Mac and various questions

Post by thelogan »

hey mac Quake community, I know there's a few of you out there
I know there is a way to install a PC QIII: Arena on Mac. How?
When it's "installed" (I think you just have to move some files, right?), can you play with PC quakers online. The server selection is getting pretty slim :icon33:

Also, any ideas for this issue: I've installed the os X patch, but when I try to load up optimized Os x versions (either the regular or the G4 specific), I get the Id logo, then a white screen. Uhhh, what?

Last thing. Sometimes, I'll load up the game, go to multiplayer, select internet, and it will load for a while, then say "no response from master server". Weak. But then, the other half of the time, I get the full list of the servers immediately.
I've got a G4 1.25 ghz, maxed ram, and comcast connection.

Any help/information is appreciated

You can play with any gamer, as long as they're using version 1.32 (which is the latest/final version). Follow the instructions for installation as posted in the FAQ: http://www.quake3world.com/ubb/Forum10/HTML/004500.html?

If that doesnt help, post back here.

Lastly, I'd use Only Mortal or Gameranger to find servers, as Q3's internal server list pretty much sucks ass.

Thanks Canis, I know you're an old timer here :icon29:

However...

What do I do about the white screen of death thing? I installed the patch perfectly...

Do you mean that you can play with PC'ers even when using the mac version? or that you have to install the PC version

I am running Tiger, so perhaps the white screen falls under "tiger+quake glitches"

You can play with PC users using the mac version.

Try throwing out your configuration file, located here:

/Applications/Quake3/baseq3/q3config.cfg

/Users/username/Library/Application Support/Quake3/baseq3/q3config.cfg

After they're gone try starting Q3 again. If that doesnt work, then throw out (or move to another directory) every file in your baseq3 folders (both locations) except for the pak0.pk3-pak8.pk3 files. Then try the game again. Ensure your update is the "Quake3-132-AltivecTest2" update so it will be compatible with everyone playing online.

I used to run it on Tiger with no problem (minus the known plasma/rocket freeze that causes the game to unexpectedly quit every now and then).

You know, I can't even find the q3config.cfg file in any place...
and pak 0-pak 8 are the only things in my baseq3 folder.

the config file is in your home (name directory)/ library/application support/quake3/baseq3

go in there and find hunkmegs, if your ram is maxed, set it at 128 - (you can open the config.cfg in text edit) just make sure you save it as .cfg, not as .txt file.

that 128 is double the ram allocation to teh game and should help with your white screen problem
