Having problems with spyware/pop-ups

Post by Scarface »

I keep getting window pop-ups even when i'm not on the net. Used ad-aware and spyware doctor, removed everything they detected, but it still happens.

Any ideas?

Add spybot S&D & MS's AntiSpyware to the list, and scan with them too.

Past that... Format /reinstall
and stop going to dodgy sites. :p

by the time you reformat it will have taken less time then trying to fix the problem, at least in my experience. (well for the uber spyware anyways)

is the windows messaging service turned off.
it's off by default with service pack 2.

not to be confused with windows messenger.

.upgrade to service pack2 if you haven't done so.

I'll try upgrading to sp2, if it still persists, time for format. Just don't really want to go through it again, since i just upgraded

upgraded or reformatted? either way, going to SP2 won't magically solve your spyware problems, imo.

that, to me, sounds like you were hoping SP2 would solve your problems. hence my previous post.

CRTL ALT DEL

See if theres a randomly named exe running.. like sohrse.exe or something random like that.. kill it, and see if it comes back as a new name.. if so, you got NAIL.EXE
You lose, format, it takes LONGER to get rid of it than it did to backup 500 GIGS of data and format.. :-|
[size=75][i]I once had a glass of milk.

It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.

I am now sick.

i mention sp2 because messenger is turned off by default in case you don't know how to do it in services control panel.

sp2 probably is a good idea anyway ..keeps you up to date.
