another straffling question
new to the q4w boards so im prepared for some flames =)
yes i saw the previous "strafejumpingggggg" post made earlier but i felt i needed to post another thread b/c the nature of my question is different from that hehe. ive also done some searching on the subject so plz dont flame me on that unless u want to point me into the direction im looking for but anyways the question at hand:
ive got strafejumping down and i can gain quite a bit of horizontal speed, but wut i wanna kno is, is there a specific technique for turning corners and maintaining that speed (technique as in turning the mouse a certain degree while entering the corner or something like that). pro's seem to turn corners like they were nothin :icon27:
another question i have is whether strafe jumping only helps you get horizontal speed or can you also get greater jumps vertically through strafe jumping without using rjing techniques and such.
sry for the long post, and awesome board by the way :icon25:

Welcome to the boards.
You can't really get any extra height with strafejumping, only distance/speed, but if you do rocket jump while strafing you'll get quite a bit more height out of it than you would a normal RJ.
As far as turning corners, it's tricky and takes a lot of practice (I'm still not great at it myself tbh), but you want to let off the forward key for just a second when you turn, and then press it again before you land.
Even when you know how to do it, it's difficult without a lot of practice.

That's basically the description of air control like in CPMA (you let go of +forward and go around corners with strafe and mouse control). In Oblivion's trickin movie i see him making turns while sliding on the ground though...R00k wrote:As far as turning corners, it's tricky and takes a lot of practice (I'm still not great at it myself tbh), but you want to let off the forward key for just a second when you turn, and then press it again before you land.

what i find best (in q3 still waiting for q4 to arrive) like Oeloe said, is to let go of forward, and use the left or right and your mouse to control the turn.
And welcome to the forums

Quake4 feels like Quake2, you press forward then +moveleft and at the same time you shift your view to the left very little then you do +moveright and shift view slightly to the right. To do long jumps I find that you have to turn to the side a little and then curve your view to finish it.
But I hate when I hit my head on them ramps

ah well then my apologiesOeloe wrote:That only works with a mod with cpm physics in Q3. :x Dunno about Q4. Can't wait to try.CrinklyArse wrote:what i find best (in q3 still waiting for q4 to arrive) like Oeloe said, is to let go of forward, and use the left or right and your mouse to control the turn.

When rj-ing whilst strafing it does seem to get you further and much quicker, though i don't think it effects hight all that much.
Also can't wait to try for myself

LoL, apparently it's some ninja move you can do in Q4: air control by crouching/diving when going around corners and going on jumppads.akiraZ wrote:it's actually much easier in q4 i'm finding. all you have to do is crouch while you turn and then immediatly jump again...you won't lose the speed from your strafe jumping. it's wierd at first though.

That's just air strafing (accelerating in the air by 'hitting' the 'sweet spot'). You can't go higher with it (in Q3), just further.CrinklyArse wrote:When rj-ing whilst strafing it does seem to get you further and much quicker, though i don't think it effects hight all that much.
Isn't that prolactin?oxytocin wrote:oh and tnf, any hormone that regulates the flow of milk from teh breasts is good by me =)

Some corners you can, as your about to turn and are in the air, spin around counter to the direction your turning. You land in the direction of your turn as your hitting the jump button. Atleast in Q3 this worked. Dunno if it still does.
edit: You know I used mouse accel in q3 so this most likely doesnt work. Damn you id!

That's not true. There are plenty of spots I can't get to with a normal RJ, but can if I have some strafing speed built up.Oeloe wrote:That's just air strafing (accelerating in the air by 'hitting' the 'sweet spot'). That's just additional momentum. You can't gain height trough air strafing though, afaik. (I'm talking about Q3.)R00k wrote:That's not true. Of course it does, it's just physics (conservation of momentum). If you'd be traveling at, say, 1500 ups and would be heading towards small obstacle and you'd RJ just before bumping in to it, you would be launched WAY up. There are demos of people doing a quad plasma jump against one of those small light posts next to the jumppad under RA, making them fly to the RG pad.MidnightQ4 wrote:hmm that doesn't sound right.
Of course you can't transfer all of your horizontal speed into vertical speed with a RJ, but you can transfer some of it.

I used to wait for a split second in Q3 before I jump again while changing direction. I found this way you maintain most of your momentum and you can run around almost 90 degree corners pretty fats.
As for strafing/building up speed to get higher jumps: as in Q4 the ramp jumps are sort of back, I'm sure you can get some serious heights when you have a fair speed
No map yet to try this out for the moment I think.

so...i went back and installed q3 with cpma. i can tell it helps alot with air control as some of u have said b/c it allows you to actually turn ur body in mid-air. the movement seems less cumbersome and more fluid with cpma. the problem im having now is i make myself turn by letting go of the +forward and turning the mouse about 70 degrees the other direction so that im facing that way, but my model still wants to go in the same direction it was going earlier so instead of a fluid turning motion i either slow down or it feels like im side jumping. but ill definately practice some more with the tips u guys have shared.
i also like how cpma clips u to edges so that u can make those long strafe jumps across gaps instead of hitting the edge and falling.
