Removing desktop icons and shortcuts

Post by DRuM »

I have 2 icons on my desktop that I want to remove because I like a clean desktop and I access favourite programs by pinning to my start menu. One is Quake4 and one is for Kquery4, the game browser. When I went to delete the Kquery one it said ' this removes the icon and doesn't uninstall the program' but in fact, once I deleted it and then clicked on it from the start menu, it said' Kquery4.lnk cannot be found'. So I restored the icon from my recycle bin. And when I try to delete the Quake 4 one, it doesn't tell me it's only removing the icon, it just says ' are you sure you want to send Quake4 to the recycle bin?' Erm, no?

How can I get rid of these without stopping them working? Thanking you!

odd behaviour for sure.

you make have dragged quake4.exe to the desktop instead of creating a quake4 shortcut.
in effect deleting quake4.exe and not quake4 shortcut

check q4 folder for quake3.exe there should be 2 instances on the original and the other the shortcut.

turn on the thingy that changes icon to show that's it's a shortcut
with tweakui "shortcut overlay"

dragging i think should have made a shortcut but sometimes i notice it takes the exe out

that kquery one sounds like the shortcut on your start menu was to the shortcut on your desktop, rather than the application itself.

the other one sounds like what ax said.

Thanks for the tips guys.
Well, as it happens, I just uninstalled and reinstalled Q4 and said no this time to desktop shortcut ( I must have clicked yes to everything the first time in my excitement just to play it!) and reinstalled Kquery unticking the option for a desktop icon.

lmfao
Because the links in your start bar wernt pointing to the games and apps EXE files, they were pointing to the fucking desktop shortcut..

It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.

I am now sick.
