TIPS: Fast Weapon Switching

Post by clkou »

I was dueling last night on the Fragging Yard 1 vs 1. I was by the rail gun while my opponent was in the teleport room near the hovering yellow armor. He was shooting hyperblasters @ me and switched to his lightning gun, but I was amazed, because he seemed to do it almost instantly - the stream of lightning gun that transitioned from the hyperblaster was almost fluid.

It made me wonder: is there is a technique for fast weapon switching, or at least faster than I'm doing it?

Clearly.

Bind your chosen weapon to a key/button you can press quickly.

I have my rail at "F".

So clearly, what I would of done is help down fire with the LG, and then pressed F while still holding fire. It would of fired the RG ASAP.

With all of the guns, you must wait until the gun has reloaded before switching to another weapon. In the case of the railgun, this means a long wait after firing before the next shot or weapon becomes useful. However in the cases of hyperblaster and lightning gun, the re-firing rate is extremely high, and so the delay to switching weapons is far lower.

Weapon switching is definitely delayed fractionally compared to Q3 which was instantaneous apart from rail reload time. At least, it was in OSP.

Weapon switching in Q3 was not instantaneous.

Quake4 has slow weapon switching, compared to Quake3.

In CPMA it was instantaneous.

You can fire much faster after you've switched, but it takes alonger time to actually switch.

 I suppose you mean in Q3 (where the weapon switch time already bugged me).

Yeah Q4 weapon switch time is a tad longer than Q3, which did bug me on several occasions.

actually it really isn't any different at all. i thought it was slower at first too until i noticed something a little odd...

i was using the lightning gun, then i switched the rl while still holding fire. a rocket fired before the rl had even appeared to have switched. i tried it a couple other times to make sure i wasn't just seeing things but it's the weapon switch animations that seem to be slower, not the actual switch.

ya if you fire the rail then switch to the rocket for instance while holding down fire, a rocket will fly out sooner than you think.

also, for those of you who don't like the delay, just imagine what it would be like if there was no delay, it would be rocket, rail, rocket, rail, as fast as ppl could mash the keys. this was sorta a problem in ut2k3 where ppl would just pound keys as fast as they could and spam all kinds of crap at you in 1-2 seconds. the delays are a good thing.

Yah, instantaneous was the wrong word, but it does take a bit longer ( edit: seemingly, Ill have to try the above tips)

You still have to wait till the weapon has reloaded (meaning you can switch MG, HB and LG (and gaunt) fast to combine with a rocket or rail. That's how CPMA works and it's the way i like it best: only my own skill holding me back, not gameplay!

@Riddla: OSP has the VQ3 core gameplay so the weapon switch time is 450 ms. 100 ms would be quite close to CPMA (which is really instant except for switches to MG), which OSP isn't. Get your facts right. :p

here's the thing i dont like about the weapon switching in relation to q3..

in a battle, you have RG, you decide to switch to RL so you hit the RL key while the RG is reloading.. but you decide you want to keep RG and try again so you tap RG key before RL comes out and while you still have RG on screen. now in q3 nothing happens and you keep RG, but in q4 it will switch to RL and hittin that RG key won't cancel the weapon switch :/
