"Crouch slide" movement help
First off I'd like to say hi to everyone. Played quake 1 mp from it's release back in the day (yay for 500 ping :icon25: ), moved to q3 years later. Took a break for ut and css (blah) , and now back for q4. Feels good to be back on board with the best fps again.
Anyway, I've been having problems figuring out the crouch slide and jumps off of it. For example, I can get the sliding motion down, but after that I can't seem to launch back into strafing. I also can't seem to control my movement when sliding. The yellow armor boost off of the stairs on "Over the Edge" is what made me realize I wasn't doing it properly. I am also wondering if crouch slides can be executed out of strafe jumping or if it's only out of circle jumps and launch pads.
Just for reference I can do the infamous rail jump on pro-q3dm6 without any problems, so my movement is decent. Just having trouble picking up this new technique.
P.S. is there a command like "showmovespeed" for quake 4, or was that only an osp/cpma thing? Thanks guys. :icon31:

Wrong! Did you ever catch a rocket that was aimed for the head while crouching?axbaby wrote:if q3 is like q4 wether crouching or standing the "hitbox" was the same size.
forget about crouching, if it was a good thing the pros would be doing it
(SS taken with cheats and cg_drawBbox 1 in Unlagged 2.01.)
It's true though crouching isn't very useful in close combat. In some situations it could help confuse your enemy a bit (he'll be aiming for the upper body).

With all due respect, I think the pros are going to be using the crouch slide once people work with it and figure out new tricks. For example, that trick on over the edge to get to the ya in the mh room. People can make that jump to the ya in one fluid movement by doing circlejump-----> crouchslide-----> rampjump. If you can pull that off consistently, that could be huge.
I liken it to the circlestrafe to the rg on q3dm6: it saves you time, and gives you fast access to resources that you wouldn't otherwise have when under pressure. It just seems to me that having it as a tool in your disposal could prove to be a big advantage. There's got to be other, similar ways on different maps in which the technique could be used.
Speaking of which, if anyone here is able to pull that ya jump off (and I'm sure there's plenty :lub: ), what is the trick? Do you let go of crouch as soon as you start sliding up the stairs, and then jump immediately? The timing is what confuses me. :icon32:

its pretty easy. get on The Fragging Yard and take the jump on the right side of this pic.

right before you land hit and hold crouch and nothing else and you will slide. If you do it right you can take that jump, do the same above only this time hit your right strafe button and move your mouse to the right and slide off the floor you landed on to the floor infront of the teleporter.

That's an advantage in a way: shooting 'body parts' that are outside the bounding box it doesn't do damage. A big model like Tankjr or Keel is obviously more easier to see though.dzjepp wrote:That's why in q3 using tankjr as an enemymodel (in osp/cpma) is a bad idea cuz his giant head sticks out of the hitbox, even when standing.
