Quake 4 - Server List Freezes

Post by Rel333 »

Randomly, when I start/refresh/update the server list it crashes my computer but sometimes it dosen't. I have no idea whats going on but when I play the game it works fine, it's just the annoying server list that freezes.

Anyone know whats the problem?

Possibly your network card or software firewall, because refreshing the server list causes a lot of outbound connections in a very short space of time.

Are you behind a router?

Yeah i'm on router.

I'm not so sure if it is the firewall because it allows me to pass through on other games. But my Norton Antivirus has pop ups saying if you want to access and I select permit but it keeps appearing, it's weird. Like I said, sometimes it does work but other times it'll just freeze now and again :tear:

wait, wait, let me get this straight.

you are running a router ( That has a firewall in it, a hardware one no less ) Then you are running Norton Firewall on the side?

This would be why its fucking up. simply put.

Amidy, I think you're confusing the issue.

Software firewalls (Kerio, Windows Firewall, Sygate, Zonealarm) and what's commonly (and erroneously) reffered to as a hardware firewall (NAT Router) accomplish different goals, and run just fine in unison.

I do agree that they are different, but when a NAT Device is in front of you're computer, you shouldn’t need a Software based firewall on top of that.

and i am not saying that they DONT work together, they will work, but some times there are issues such as this, i would be willing to bet that if he actually removed the Software firewall out of the picture and tried, he wouldn’t get this problem anymore

i know it sounds rather Stupid, but this is what I’ve come to determine through trail and error.
