I'm looking for one that will just scan my computer, but not install any automatic monitoring and run in my tray, etc. Any suggestions?

Online scanners i guess?
Panda ActivScan?
Trend Micro Housecall?
I think all installed Antivirus programs are going to put stuff on the tray.

all av's now have "Resident Sheilds", so no matter what they will be running in the background..
if you are looking to scan, simply go to an online like bdw said, especally housecall.

Most of them take next to no resources to run and provide more protection by preventing a virus from instantiating itself in the first place so just load up a resident one.

Also, some have the option to scan on file *write* and not on file *read*. This means it will scan files as you download them or load them from disk, but wont impact on loading games or such at all.

Miniscule resource usage?
Ever been gaming, oh say, Fear, in 1280x1024 full detail, full AA, and had a virus scanner kick on? 30fps down to 2fps instantly..
[size=75][i]I once had a glass of milk.
It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.
I am now sick.

Why would your virus scanner kick in half way through a game?
That sounds like a scheduled scan, not a resident shield.

Auto Update, Auto Scan after getting new updates..
Happens like every 12 hours or so..

I suggest altering the settings.
