downloading archives corrupts them?

Post by 4days »

so i was trying to talk this lad through downloading and opening a zip of the site i've made him. he downloads the file and it's corrupt. i check it, compile it again, up it and the same thing happens, a crc error.

i got him to install winrar in case it was a problem with power archiver (that's what he had installed) and it reported the same error - then got him to download a zip from another site and it reported a crc error as well.

hard to tell what's happening at his end because he's not very technically literate (one line in the conversation was "see that key with the windows icon on it, push that one") and neither am i (one line in the conversation was "i have no idea, it's silver, it's quiet and i can play quake4 on it so who cares?").

fixed the problem by making a little installer and upping that instead - but has anyone seen this problem of archives not downloading properly before? got to round there next week and i don't want to spend too long on the usual free-tech-support-thrown-in-with-webwork thing.

??
googled possible answer, from what i can tell a virus ,virus checkers etc may be adding some unseen data or altering the zip file.
a firewall may be causing some data not to be received thus not making a complete zip file matching the original.i've had this problem before ..my zip file size was different then the one that was being sent to me.

If you get a "CRC" error when installing: This indicates that the download did not complete properly. This could simply be due to a connection problem, but it can also be caused by security software that prevents downloading "EXE" files. Such programs as Norton, McAffee, or various other anti-spyware and anti-virus programs can cause this.
