Firefly addiction....

Post by ScooterG »

Several weeks ago my bf dragged me to Serenity, which I had never even heard of and didn't really want to see since I had also never heard of - much less watched - Firefly. Well, of course it was a really good movie and I told said bf, who had also never watched Firefly, that we should buy the DVDs.

So basically, my head and eyeballs now ache because we nearly watched all 14 episodes in a row! I just couldn't stop myself from the "just one more episode" plea. And now I am sad. I have seen all the episodes, watched all the Special Features and seen the movie. :tear:

Now what do I do?!? :icon23:

Who cancelled this show?!? When is the next movie? Will more episodes be commissioned by someone other than FOX? HELP!!!!

ETA: I even miss the Mutant Enemy at the end. "Grrr. Arrggh." :tear:

console yourself with the knowledge that it ended while you still thought it was good. the missus was a big fan of buffy the vampire slayer, but the last couple of seasons were rubbish enough to make her sell her dvds.

Well, the DVDs include 2 epsiodes that were never aired and show the pilot as one 2-hour long episode instead of the way FOX aired it as a "To be continued" (2 one-hour episodes). So that's all good.... The special features aren't fanTAStic, but what is there is good (making of, deleted scenes - one's a real gem, a tour of Serentity, etc...). Whedon said in one spoecial feature that he thought the way they aired the pilot as 2 parts kind of screwed the series over (people needed 2 full hours to get involved in the characters)....

OMG, priests of the firefly temple attack!

The original was good, the tv series was not.

Can't you see she is addicted and needs something to ease the withdrawal?

LEXX would turn her off sci-fi permanently, she probably needs something softer, like Star Trek, that'll only ease down the need a couple of notches

Yeah, I like Star Trek Next Generation, Star Wars, the first Matrix and MST3K (of course!), but I think this Firefly is sort of irreplaceable....

Amidy, I have TOTALLY been wondering about the Shepard.... You might be right....

Not that I recall.... They were aired out of order? I wonder which of the 14 episodes were the 2 that never aired....

scooter didn't you watch the dvd extras? Apparently they detail the whole account of what happened.

quote from imdb:
As with BtVS, the world is divided into people who get Firefly and people who don't. In this series Joss Whedon created one of the most realistic post-war visions of the future ever committed to tape, that at the same time spoke about yesterday and today. Maybe a little too much today for its own good.

The series is anti-corporate, anti-government and, while it takes the stand that some things are worth fighting for, it is largely anti-war. No wonder FOX did everything in its power to kill it off, including airing episodes out of order, skipping weeks after airing only three eps and, inevitably canceling the show without even airing episodes 12, 13 and 14 (out of 15). This was particularly damaging, as Firefly had a greater sense of ongoing plot than any other Whedon series in its first year. Viewers were left wondering, on more than one occasion, when a character would reference something we hadn't seen yet.

The backstage dramatics aside, Firefly is intelligent and, like Buffy, mythic - except this time Whedon is dealing with the myth of America: the Frontier, the Civil War, the rise of the Corporation, etc . . .

Firefly is a demanding show. It asks its audience to appreciate the shades of grey in its characters' moral scale. The villains are not comfortingly dressed as an alien race. In 500 years mankind will still be its own worst enemy. Technology will be in the hands of a privileged few, and others will in "The Black" - Whedon's frontier third world - where it is possible to exist without the interference (or benefit) of civilization and government. Things will be dirty, and used. Firefly creates a universe that almost totally opposes that of (that bastion of television sci-fi) Star Trek: its Federation-like central power (the Alliance) is interpreted as being oppressive and dystopic. We are on the side of those who resisted (like the Maqui) and lost.

The acting is strong, the writing as excellent, funny and moving as on any Whedon show, and the effects and sets create a consistent, believable world. It is a shame the series didn't have a more hospitable environment in which to grow and become all it could have been.
