quote from imdb:
As with BtVS, the world is divided into people who get Firefly and people who don't. In this series Joss Whedon created one of the most realistic post-war visions of the future ever committed to tape, that at the same time spoke about yesterday and today. Maybe a little too much today for its own good.

The series is anti-corporate, anti-government and, while it takes the stand that some things are worth fighting for, it is largely anti-war. No wonder FOX did everything in its power to kill it off, including airing episodes out of order, skipping weeks after airing only three eps and, inevitably canceling the show without even airing episodes 12, 13 and 14 (out of 15). This was particularly damaging, as Firefly had a greater sense of ongoing plot than any other Whedon series in its first year. Viewers were left wondering, on more than one occasion, when a character would reference something we hadn't seen yet.

The backstage dramatics aside, Firefly is intelligent and, like Buffy, mythic - except this time Whedon is dealing with the myth of America: the Frontier, the Civil War, the rise of the Corporation, etc . . .

Firefly is a demanding show. It asks its audience to appreciate the shades of grey in its characters' moral scale. The villains are not comfortingly dressed as an alien race. In 500 years mankind will still be its own worst enemy. Technology will be in the hands of a privileged few, and others will in "The Black" - Whedon's frontier third world - where it is possible to exist without the interference (or benefit) of civilization and government. Things will be dirty, and used. Firefly creates a universe that almost totally opposes that of (that bastion of television sci-fi) Star Trek: its Federation-like central power (the Alliance) is interpreted as being oppressive and dystopic. We are on the side of those who resisted (like the Maqui) and lost.

The acting is strong, the writing as excellent, funny and moving as on any Whedon show, and the effects and sets create a consistent, believable world. It is a shame the series didn't have a more hospitable environment in which to grow and become all it could have been.
I watched ALL of the Special Features and I just don't recall them saying anything about the epsiodes airing out of order...gonna have to go back and watch again.

Oh, and I went and watched Serenity in the theatre again last night. WAY cool to see it after seeing the whole series....

reason I thought the extras talked about it was coz of this quote:

k i still can't find any info about why fox fucked the show up so bad. All i can find is angry speculation from fans (which may or may not be off the mark).

I can't find any official statements from fox about the screw-up.

Did they claim it to be an accident?

Is it safe to watch Serenity first or should I download the series before I watch the movie?

you should obtain the series (legally of course) before watching the movie.

I know it's been said that you'll understand the movie without the series, but trust me when I say that the best way to experience this phenomenon is by watching the series first.

DO NOT WATCH MOVIE BEFORE SERIES IF U HAVE ACCESS TO SERIES.

Truthfully, i really dont like the movie all that much.. so much changes that it would be allmost impossable for them to pick up the Tv series After it.. ( if that is going to happen.. pls?! )

Gah, no clue though. i hope they actually pick up on it again.

it's no wonder it flopped - they didn't air the pilot first - so right away nobody has a clue wtf is going on.

plus they marketed as an action comedy :icon27:

something is crawling inside my stomach telling me the real reason it flopped was coz it was geared towards an audience with a higher level of intelligence than the average fox viewer though...

ScooterG wrote: ...Who cancelled this show?!? When is the next movie? Will more episodes be commissioned by someone other than FOX? HELP!!!!

ETA: I even miss the Mutant Enemy at the end. "Grrr. Arrggh." :tear:
The show was cancelled because of insufficient fans. Take a look at below:

Date Episode Nielson-Rating Show-Ranking
September 20, 2002 (Series Premiere) 4.0 14/15
September 27, 2002 Bushwhacked 3.6 14/16
October 4, 2002 Our Mrs. Reynolds 3.3 12/12
October 18, 2002 Jaynestown 2.7 13/14

Fox wanted it to succeed, but if a new show (which is competing with 12-16 others) starts out ranked 14 of 15, then you might say, "well maybe next week it will shoot up" but it winds up at the bottom - 14 of 16 and then you might say, "well we will give it one more chance" and on the third week it does 12 of 12 shows. DOH!

Also, it doesnt take a genius to see the ratings ( which is roughly millions of viewers ) falling:

Ep#1: 4.0 -> Ep#2: 3.6 -> Ep#3: 3.3
This is not the trend any studio wants to see!

I'd guess anybody would cancel the fucker.

Some episodes afterwards were shown out of order because they became "space-fillers" which had been paid for. In short, Firefly was the most unpopular show they had. If ur first 3 episodes completely tank, game over.

If you want more Firefly, plunk down your cash for tickets! Serenity is not doing well at the box office.

I bought the DVD's after really enjoying the movie. Now I only have three episodes left to watch. I really hope they make some more, it's very annoying to find something that you like a lot and it's already cancelled after only one series.

Two things:

1) do the dvd extras talk about the fox debacle as you said they did

2) if they do, do they give fox's perspective on the mess-up?

Wash: "Everything looks good from here... (beat...playing with plastic dinosaurs over his console) Yes. Yes, this is a fertile land, and we will thrive."

(as Stegosaurus) "We will rule over all this land, and we will call it... 'This Land'."
Kaylee: "Goin' on a year now and I ain't had nothin' twixt my nethers weren't run on batteries!"
Zoë: "Shepard, isn't the Bible kind of specific about killing?"
Book: "Very specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzy around the area of kneecaps."
Simon: "I've never shot anyone before."
Book: "I was there, son. I'm fairly sure you haven't shot anyone yet."
Mal: "Jayne, your mouth is talking. You might want to see to that."
Mal: "And Kaylee, what the hell's goin' on in the engine room? Were there monkeys? Some terrifying space monkeys maybe got loose?"
Book: "If you take sexual advantage of her, you're going to burn in a very special level of hell. A level they reserve for child molesters and people who talk at the theater."
Book: "What are we up to, sweetheart?"

River: "Fixing your Bible."

Book: "I, um...(alarmed)...what?"

River: "Bible's broken. Contradictions, false logistics - doesn't make sense." (she's marked up the bible, crossed out passages)

Book: "No, no. You - you can't...

River: "So we'll integrate non-progressional evolution theory with God's creation of Eden. Eleven inherent metaphoric parallels already there. Eleven. Important number. Prime number. One goes into the house of eleven eleven times, but always comes out one. Noah's ark is a problem."

Book: "Really?"

River: "We'll have to call it early quantum state phenomenon. Only way to fit 5000 species of mammal on the same boat." (rips out page)
Wash: "And then came the lying to me about it, which for me is sort of the highlight of this little adventure."

Zoe: "Is there any way I'm gonna get out of this with honor and dignity?"

Wash: "You're pretty much down to ritual suicide, lambie-toes."
Zoe: "No one's gonna force you to go, Jayne. As has been stated -- this job's strictly speculative."

Jayne: "Good. 'Cause I don't know these folks, don't much care to."

Mal: "They're whores."

Jayne: "I'm in."
Wash: "Psychic, though? That sounds like something out of science fiction."

Zoe: "We live in a space ship, dear."
