FPS Map Pack FINAL ! big fps boost
just released my performance map pack.
What that is ? well, I tweaked all quake4 dm maps to have a more adjustable LOD for the lights.Now you can use the r_lightdetaillevel command to blend out unneeded lights like on the ceiling and jumppads.
with high numbers you can even have only the ambientlight, much like the r_singlelight command does.

This is a mappack containing performance tweaked versions of the original Quake4 MP maps.
No gameplay changes, just made accessable LOD for lights.
Installation :

Extract and put into baseq4 directory
usage :

Load from multiplayer menu.
r_lightdetaillevel [-1,0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9] - Controls the threshold at which lights are drawn. Any light below this threshold is skipped. This particularly helps with CPU limited systems
Usable ranges are from 0(slower) to 9(faster)
rule of thumb : 1 to 3 are mostly non visible lights and corridors
4 jumpads and corridor-crossways gets dark
5 to 8 only bigger rooms and chockepoints are lit
9 singlelight / ambientlight
I recommend 3 for very good visual quality, 5 still has good quality but gives big performance and 9 for most performance
You will have to adjust your r_gamma + r_brightness settings when using different lightdetails.

As much as I prefer to play with higher detail eye candy turned on, I have to admit that the very high system requirements to even get a normal level of playability in this game is going to be a very large deterrent to getting the average player to play the game. I am one of those tweaker types to tries out every setting to get an extra 1 fps out of the game and even after doing so the performance is still barely tolerable on my med-high level machine. This is with everything turned off that I can find.
Raven, if you're reading this, know that something major needs to be done to allow the average gamer to enjoy playing this game online. If you require everyone to spend another $2000 to get their system up to snuff to play this game right then you are going to drastically reduce the initial player base. Obviously reducing lighting makes the game look worse, but most people are going to favor that compared to getting single digit frame rate drops. Anyway I say leave the tweaking options to the player, if they want to play the game in 640 mode with 16x16 textures let them, it's all about having fun, and 10 fps is no fun for anyone.

have you run the ggl timedemo? what fps do you get average on that? I would venture to guess that you do see fps drops but maybe just don't notice them much. my system is a bit lower on the gpu than yours, but I'm running with everything at very low detail and I still get fps drops into the 10's and 20's when there is a lot of stuff going on. Hop onto dm8 with 10+ ppl and see what kind of fps you get. it works like custommaps, just load from mp meu ,my maps are lower case and to see a difference use the r_lightdetaillevel command like i wrote in my first post.MidnightQ4 wrote:put this on my server, now how do we play the maps? I can't seem to see any difference, even with cheats turned on.

Disabling g_muzzleflash also helps solve frame drops (i get a drop of 10 FPS (60 to 50) when i use LG with muzzleflash lights).catphone wrote:hey anybody,i have a question
