My whole point is that there is zero reason to force people to play with view bob. Therefore it should be turned off on the server and if people prefer it then they can turn it on. Basically some ppl are saying "If you want to play on my server you are going to have to play with view bob cause I like it and so should you." That's just an assanine thing to do.
This is just going in circles. The vars a server runs with are the choice of it's admin and if you choose to turn that particular one off on your server then great, we're all very proud for you. Now for the love of fuck do everyone a favor and shut up about it.

This is merely a theory, but I wonder if issues such as 'bob and pitch' need to be synched between server and client due to the skeletal animation system.

I'm thinking this may have been required for D3, as there were no bounding boxes required for hit detection - so all the skeleton info needed to be passed back n forth between clients and servers to register hits and misses appropriately.

If that is the case, Q4 *shouldn't* need to, as bounding boxes for MP weapons fire are back a la Q3.

Dunno if I'm right tho. :(

Doubtful, because bob/pitch is an effect applied to the client's view only. It's just the way your screen moves, not your actual model.

Good point. I still hope it is fixable, as it is a rather silly issue to divide the playerbase over, unless there's a damn good reason.

a good theory, but that sounds like a horribly inefficient thing to do with valuable network bandwidth. also you can play without bob in q4 so it definitely doesn't need it.

Of course it is fixable, all that is needed is to make the settings be controlled client side.

you can turn off "bob" in almost every MP game anymore.. alot of us, hate it.. They really need to make that client side, because well, i cant stand the bob while im busting ass around a map, and im not alone evidently....

Look at the outside of your screen and pick a fixed point to observe. Now run to it and you will notice it bobs up and down and rolls a bit side to side, as will your weapon.

If you are used to not having the picture move, it's distracting. Particularly, as the eye is very sensitive to movement. So more movement means you may not pick up a target on your periphery of vision.

In the past, the option has been up to the player to choose whether the player wants it. Personally, I play on non-bob servers. If these are more popular, the others will follow.

I don't think they have ever had it to be a client side option. Normally it's server side.

In other games I've played, if one person is able to turn bob off, and others arn't, it's considered an advantage to the person without bob.

But I understand what you are saying make the option to turn it on or off, so everyone can get what they want.

In Quake 4 no, its server side only.. in other quakes its been client side..

And not just other quakes, other quake engine games. So those of us who are used to the family of engines get v. crabby when our favorite cvars, learned by trial and error, stop working.

It's discrimination against the elderly. :icon33: :p

(Documenting available player cvars would be frigging nice though.)
