Strange Happenings with Emachine

Post by zolborg »

Got a client with an Emachine [yeah, I know] and out of the blue it wouldn't start. It would actually start, but no post, nothing at all except that it WOULD turn on.

I tried a few things with no luck, so I figured Motherboard.

Put in a new motherboard and it posted fine and I reinstalled XP Home. After the install, it kept saying restating computer [like forever] so I manually turned it off and restarted.

Now it won't even post again?????

Any thoughts, aside from maybe power supply.

Just tried a new [known good] power supply, still no post.

Tried a different [known good] stick of Ram, still no post.

Only thing left is the CPU, I guess???

Weird how it posted before I did the install and now it won't.

Tried all that. Even took the motherboard out of the case and set it up on the floor.....all connected and still no post.

Thought maybe something on the MB was touching the case.

I just put the CPU in and applied Arctic Silver and then attached the HS.

Guess I can try it again.

I'm at a loss for new ideas.

Oh, lack of keyboard would not stop post. Have removed CMOS battery, cleared CMOS, etc. No error beeps from speaker. Silence and nothing, but it does turn on. Fuck!

I could be wrong, but I believe that if the cpu was overheating, it would still post and then restart.

PSU going bad.. thats my guess
[size=75][i]I once had a glass of milk.

It curdled, and then I couldn't drink it. So I mixed it with some water, and it was alright again.

I am now sick.

Being an Emachine, that's what I guessed, but I DID swap it out with a known good and it didn't help.

Yes dildo, PSUs if going bad, and or have dying rails can kill motherboards and cause this same issue..

Tried a "new" on?

Sounds silly, i know.. Ive just had similar issues with other machines and a "new" psu has fixed said issue..

Hell, maybe the HD is going bad.. it could be so many fucking things its almost impossible to "guess" correctly without sitting next to it..

Anything I have seen it will POST and then give you an error message saying keyboard [and /or mouse] is not found, connected, or whatever. BUT, it does have a mouse and keyboard attached.

As for the hard drive, again, that should not prevent post as you DO NOT even need a hard drive attached to post.
