COD 2 lags

I get no more than 20 fps in that game, and my friend has the same setup as me, or at least I have a better one. Yet he still gets an an average of between 30-40 fps.

Amd 64 3200+
1024mb PC3200 with 680mb left
160gb hd
e-Geforce 6800 8x 128mb with latest drivers (81. ?)


He also says his Raedon 9600se plays COD2 on exta 4x without any lag. Is that even possible if it was PCI-e 256mb (even though it wasn't)?

This should be on a Cod forum, but I'm sure this isn't the only time its going to happen.

Im running this on 640 with no aa and everything on low with no shadows and I still get 20 fps. It hurts.

Do I need more drivers or something? Or is this a hardware issue?

Check your drivers, make sure you don't have anything running in the background, scan for viruses, spyware, etc. Could be anything really.

Roll back to an older set of drivers (for example, v77.77 like SoM uses) and see if the problem persists. Might be a bug in the new drivers.

Same here.. tho im using the newest Nvidia drivers.. 1280x1024 full detail 2x aa and its smooth as can be..

Its really shiny tho.. anyone else think they need to tone down the shine?

Just beat the Nexus level on Quake 4 on high no aa with no lag.

Edit: Do you guys play on DirectX 7 or DirectX 9? I can play with everything max on Direct 7 but barley 20 fps on Direct 9.

only Dx 9 for me, all systems are go

DX7 would be pointless for most newer games which make use of features in DX8 and DX9 (in fact, in most newer games DX7 isn't even supported).

It's a feature in the game. It looks a little bit worse with DX7 mode but you get double the framerate. esp. on shittier rigs.

I downloaded the new beta drivers. They upped my fps by at least 10. I highly recomend the download if you havn't yet.

It doesn't look a LITTLE worse, it take away pretty much everything. Try the two, and you will see ;)

I'm pretty skeptical of it running at all on Dx7 since the game has been designed around, and requires, DX9.

Thats what I would have thought also, that there would have been stability problems or something. But if all DX9 does is make pretty pictures well I make things look worse then Q1 anyway...

Well I admit that I am ignorant as to how the engine works but I thought that the rendering was all handled by opengl, and the dx stuff was for textures/sounds ?

The engine is openGL but DX9 calls are still being made. You'll note that during the install it mentions requiring DX9 to play...

Yeah Ive got it to that point, but what are the calls for? I think I want to much information, the understanding I am looking for is probably something I should research.

doom3 engine <-> opengl <-> dx9 <-> os? Or is the OS removed and its direct to hardware?

And directx is a windows API correct? So what does Linux talk to?

Directx allows games to directly access hardware such as video cards, sound cards, etc. by bypassing the OS's protected system memory. The kernel still has to handle the i/o.

Linux uses SDL, Simple DirectMedia Layer.

Backtracking to DX7 could affect other software on your system. You would be wise to ghost or image it prior, lest you need to re-install. It is not a simple package. I am not an NT expert, but I believe it comprises 7-8 different APIs.

Yeah I wanted to roll back in the Team Arena age I think it was and things didnt go well. I am going to wipe my pc and start over maybe this weekend...

stop whining about directx,
dx is used for a few things: sound and input devices (maybe even netcode) but that's all.

If you have troubles running open-GL games, there are a few things to consider:
-mobo drivers
-gfx drivers
-background apps (vir-scanner, firewall, and stuff like that)
(somehow every sys i install Norton-AV on, gets a certain 2 sec lag every minute or so)
So my guess is, compare what's running on your box with the stuff on the other box that doesn't have the lag.
