I go into my video card drivers, into the gamma control and hit apply. Since it's still set on the proper settings, it goes back to normal without adjusting the setting.
easiest way to fix this is to (if you have it) join 2 q3 servers at the same time and let pb kick you. hit escape on both when they are loaded and "exit game". this will reverse the over gamma'd pc.

LoL, Psyche911's method is simpler (also what i use). I have the crashes in Q4 too, sometimes, and it puzzles me what it does to my system. Q4 refuses to load again after a crash, but i can play Q3 without problems (the first time i start it it loads really slow though, showing the blue console).
