Yeah, he's pretty awesome. Even cooler when he'll extend his claws, sink his head in and come out with the big ass teeth he has when he attacks.

Never judge a book by it's cover, and don't expect the same old low poly square monsters. ;)

Don't get me wrong, I like the model it just doesn't represent that classic shambler look :)

Here are some pics of a Shambler my friend did for a Quake remake mod:

Just as an example, most of Quake 4's monsters were Quake 2 monsters, but not one of them looked the same. Did Quake 4 suck? Not in the least bit. It rocked. We know what the "original" Shambler looks like 10x over, but who's interested in making the same exact looking model again? Look at it from a developers standpoint. There's 50% of gamers who want the exact Quake 1 Shambler, and the other 50% want a new looking Shambler.

What I said WAS from a dev's perspective, also I want to meet this 50% :) I've been showing that pic around and not one person has agreed to say that is a good shambler replacement. I guess Quake is just one of those games where you just don't try and fix what ain't broke :)

Zombie, in reality, the general populous who play Quake is fairly larger than the ring of friends you've shown the image too. We appreciate you showing it around though. I understand it's quite hard for a lot of people to accept change, but why reiterate over and over that it doesn't look like the original Shambler? We know that, and it's not supposed to, or going to.

If people want to keep making the same stuff over and over, that's fine, there's nothing wrong with it. We on the otherhand have the ability to do new things and new ideas from scratch, so that's what we do.

Typical #tf, Func_ user

Post by AnalSphincter »

You can see by the people that zombie quoted, vondur, Blitz,, and the fact that he is quoting #tf, that he is mainly talking about a fairly hardcore Quake group of people. Generally peeps for Func_ and #tf seem to dislike any changes to Quake, (fixing bugs aside) they dislike newer engines that use graphical enhancements etc, they prefer things to be left as close as possible to how quake is, was meant to be. Some even preferring not to use a gl engine at all, instead preferring that ugly pixilated look. Of course if it is one of their own who makes changes, well that's another matter all together ;)

So don't be to concerned Kiltron if they diss your efforts, it would be very hard to please them, unless of course you just directly imported the original Quake model ;) or stayed ultra true to it's design, look.

I think the model looks great, and would have no problem accepting it as a shambler in another game/mod. And look forward to seeing it in action. I am also a Quake lover, and still play the original Quake on a daily basis, trying out every new map and mod that gets released. However I am not as resistant to change as some.

Kiltron, you're right that doing something new with classic monsters can be a plus, but IMO, if you recreate a classic monster, it has to have features that characterized the original monster.

That shambler has nothing linking it to the original Shambler, and that's a shame.
Zombie's Shambler remake might look like a 1:1 copy, but it's instantly recognizable as a shambler.

Look at the Quake 4 Gladiator or Berserker. They have quite a different look from their Quake 2 counterparts, but they're instantly recognizable as the Gladiator and Berserker.

That's what a remake needs to achieve. The Shambler you posted lacks this and, like MKJ said, looks more like a LotR cave troll.

Read my post about 3 posts back. We got it covered with animation/morphing ya dig? Like I mentioned, were not just gonna make the monsters walk around stale like they are in Quake. We can do much more now with todays technology. ;)

I feel I have to defend myself here since I was quoted and what not.

First of all, that looks nothing like a Shambler. I'm not some fucking hardcore fanboy who hates any change to Quake, but if you're going to bother doing a render like that, at least use some kind of fur or hair system to show it off -- it looks scaly and the Shambler is definitely not scaly.

Secondly, Kiltron, stop trying to subversively pimp your shitty map screenshots by looking for religious references in them.

You're a fucking joke to anyone who knows you from the Quake community. In spite of the fact that you claim to have your own "company" you reek of being totally unprofessional.

Don't try to pass off your modeller's lack of ability to make the Shambler look furry as unwarranted complaining from the Quake 1 community -- the fact is that it looks like a fucking pseudo-aborted shrimp that managed to pull through and survive on microwaved pizza for 30 more years.

Like I mentioned, were not just gonna make the monsters walk around stale like they are in Quake. We can do much more now with todays technology.
Like what? Is the Shambler going to serenade me with Italian love songs? Clean my toilet? What's up? The one thing you can't do with "todays technology" (English, motherfucker) is render a Shambler that looks furry; as he is supposed to.

Also, technology won't save you from being a whiny oppurtunist, using id engines to build a name for yourself, then publicly bashing them when they didn't answer your e-mails for a few days.

P.S. Find an original idea for a mod.

Hate all you want, it's not like I actually care. I'm quite used to people's idiosyncrasies. I do appreciate you stating the obvious though, that it doesn't look like the original Quake Shambler and it doesn't have to.

Success is the ultimate revenge. Please vent elsewhere!
