mp3 player question

Post by [xeno]Julios »

Housemate is looking to get an mp3 player - he only needs half a gig of memory.

So product quality, sound quality, battery life, and size are the main things he's looking for

So far he's narrowed it down to these two

Creative Labs MUVO vs. Sundisk MX1

thought I'd ask around here if anyone had any advice or warning.

Generally yes, ignore his suggestion the Ipod shuffle is functionally crippled. The creative model you suggested sounds good, but it may be a bit pricey for what you're getting in terms of memory (possible made up for in features).

edit: Does your friend plan to exercise, jog, bike with this mp3 player?

yea it's primarily for when he's at the gym, or travelling. He just told me that he wants a flash based one for this reason.

the only buttons a Shuffle has is Play/Pause, Next, Prev, and a switch that toggles between "Off", "Shuffle", and "Continuous" (in-order play)

they're handy because they're tiny and there's no screen or anything to break, plus they have the "I own an iPod, I'm cooler than Jesus" factor. No, I don't own one.

Then an hd player would not be for him, though they can be resilient under that kind of strain. I'd wait for Jugg and a few others to chime in before you give any suggestions. I'm the least qualified of the bunch to be giving mp3 player advice.

Bullshit. I own one, so does my wife. They're fantastic, great sound, great battery life, very low weight and size. Haven't found a single thing that I don't like about it yet. I bought the 512Mb version for $99. Good deal as far as I'm concerned, and I'm very happy with it.

The Creative Labs has great sound. I couldn't tell you what that Sandisk model sounds like, but i've listened to another one of their models (cannot recall #) and it was ok.

i guess if you don't care what you're going to listen to next, sure, it's neat.

Yeah, that whole Sequential Play thing, what a pain in the ass. You do know it doesn't just play songs randomly, right?
I wanted something I could wear while jogging, and didn't want to spend $300, it fit the bill perfectly.
That said, I do find myself wanting a Nano now. Or even an iPod Video. But, too much money.

so why is the shuffle crap then? I guess not being able to visually access the database from the player itself is a problem. Or is there another way to access it?

It's not crap at all, it's a great mp3 player. I think there are just a bunch of Apple haters in here.

NS, can you access the database through the player (so you can choose a specific song)?

Would you say that is the major drawback of the shuffle?
